1200 Mile
So just got my car back from the 1200 mile service. I know this has been debated over and over on the boards.... but immediately felt a difference in pick up speed and exhaust is much louder then before (note my flaps are permanently open already).
Anyone else notice this? Also did a I drive update and noticed when I responded to a text via voice the RPMs dial disappeared and the microphone icon took its place - could it be a glitch? |

I had my running in service completed last week, I wouldn't say I noticed anything different afterwards though.
However, I did make a backup of all the ECU settings before the running in service, which I intend to repeat and compare, but I'm currently doing a European road trip, so it will have to wait until I'm back home. Also, some people have commented on the (fake) power dials showing different numbers before and after the service, but what I noticed was that the dials show different numbers depending upon whether the engine is cold or hot and did so from the outset. |

Pure placebo, no increase in anything apart from Launch Control activation.

All I gave a shit about was the right g2 and g4 oils.... I'm in Manhattan so I go slow down the side streets and it's easy to control because the pedal usually seems heavy. This time I tapped the pedal seemed lighter and took off. Who the F knows.... |

I thought it was still disabled until the 1200 mile service on the base model.

When I had my 1200 mile service at the dealer a couple of weeks ago, the service advisor (that I know for many years and have serviced all my BMWs) told me that engine was limited at 75% and they change a flag that releases the extra power during service. He said BMW decided to do that to lower power during break in. That is a very specific number.
Did I notice anything different after - especially a 25% in performance? No but engine seems to be getting smoother but this can also be because of use. My point is that this is something that circulating around even among service advisors so they must have heard it somewhere. Was the first doing the 1200 mile service at specific dealer BTW. |

The fact that dealers themselves couldn't agree on this (some say power restricted and some say no such thing exist) it just means this whole restriction thing is never substantiated. If it's actually true BMW would have put a technical bulletin out and every dealer would be saying the same thing, but they are not. Ask the dealer where he got this 75% from? Did it came from BMW official technical bulletin? Does he have any document to prove it? |

When I was at the dealership ordering my M5 there was a guy from BMW NA there briefing the sales people on the M5, and I sat in. One of the things he said was that there was nothing being done to increase engine power during the 1200 mile service.

There's no actual change in HP but the car is re-tuned and when pushed responds better. He also said you can push the shit out of it the first 1200 cause it's a beast but should notice a difference after. |

So the fact that one dealer says 25%, and yours says 12.5%, and another one says HP not changed but just re-tuned, it just tells me it's not from BMW themselves, because BMW won't be going around different dealers telling different things.

Only way to tell is to do a dyno before and after or some 0-60 1/4 mile runs before and after
