F90 Rods any better than F10?
I owned an F10 M5 Stage 1 and had no issues with rods or pistons over the 10K miles it covered mapped.
Anyone know the score with F90 rods and pistons?? Are they as weak as F10 or has BMW changed them to cope? As we know F10s let go stock as much as tuned. My F90 is currently stock but prob not for long.

We need to know if they're forged or cast, and I bet the folks at RK Autowerks should know since they are building F90 engines with upgraded forged rods. I'm betting the stock ones are cast, and not nearly as strong as high quality forged rods.

i feel like the main issue in the F10 engine wasn't the rods
my f10 engine exploded (melted together) but didn't throw a rod or bend a rod not sure what really would have caused that |

A little less than the breaking point, assuming good mods and perfect tune. Watch the Dinan podcast to learn more. The tuners are pretty consistent about the limits if you research.

If pushing the limits, the tuning is critical. The natural torque peak is where volumetric efficiency is highest, in the midrange. You limit boost in this range to limit torque. As the rpm increase past this point, you can increase boost, which will increase horsepower to the extent the turbos can keep up. I am not a tuner and don’t know these engine well, but typically factory turbos are sized for low to midrange response and the top end power potential is compromised. So you can’t just increase boost forever on the top end or you will push the turbos too far past their efficiency range, which means hotter boosted air and potentially turbo destruction.
Probably whatever Dinan at Carbahn or Utka Noa at Evolve or maybe Jordan at RK or one of a few other tuners says about safety is correct. They all seem to say about the same thing as far as torque. |
