Buying Used High Mileage M5??
Hey Everyone, still in the market for a used F90 M5. These cars are selling fast. One just came up without any details (nothing from the BMW website with no VIN attached yet) but the dealer did write the mileage which was 46K miles for a 2019.
What are all your thoughts on buying a high mileage M5? I’ve purchased a high mileage E90 328i in the past and got a great deal. I usually keep my Bavarian sweethearts for a long time. I’m planning on keep this one for a long time. Let know what your thoughts are on this particular model. Thanks all! |

The obvious answers not provided are price and history which you seem to not know. I am not aware of any systemic issues with the F90. I would be more concerned with the history of each particular car. How was it maintained, any prior issues, has the car been modified in any way, etc.

Totally hear you there.
I sent an email to the dealer. We’ll see if there’s any history of accidents, mods, history of maintenance including type of driving. My high mileage E90 I had was a highway salesmen, so wasn’t always on the brakes and sure enough, it lasted me a long time. |

Not really sure you can compare high mileage 328i to M5. For one maintenance and repair cost of the first is much less inexpensive to the second; even if considering both were thoroughly abused. And as previously mentioned, you'd need the history of the car. At ~15k mi/yr for the M5, it was driven a lot and as it should, it's phenomenal car. Personally, I wouldn't consider a mileage that high.

If I were the OP I would only purchase a high mileage F90 from someone on this board where I could see all the records on the car and have an owner to meet and speak with. To go to a dealer lot and purchase a mystery M5 would not make me feel good about my purchase.

Just got my 2018 M5 2 weeks ago with 49,853 miles. Bought it sight unseen (yeah I know) but here is why I did it.
1.) no reported accidents to Carfax or Autocheck 2.) previous owner performed all maintenance at BMW dealership, even after comp maintenance. Spark plugs, brakes, tires, everything was in accordance to BMW maintenance booklet. I'm sure they pushed the car a few times given how many times the tires were replaced but it didn't scare me from it. Oil was changed at a much sooner interval as well. 3.) I requested pics and live video to see vehicle myself. They even lifted the vehicle and removed the shields to view into the tranny and engine for oil leaks. 4.) I work at a dealership so I made sure I was able to buy a platinum coverage warranty for the M5. I probably wouldn't of done it if there was no coverage available for it. 5.) confirmed that the vehicle has no prior tuner or at least a flagged VIN by BMW High milage doesn't scare me, poorly maintenanced vehicles do. Ymmv, I got lucky. Car was transported over 1500 miles. All I encountered was a ton of dust (open carrier transport) but an extra soapy wash took care of it. Risky? Very. Worth it? Hell yeah. |

Yeah I know. Thinking more about age. In 2025, a 2-3 year old car will be a 2022-2023. But people put less miles on these so a 2021 might be just as good. With 2-3 year old cars you still have some warranty, which is nice when buying a used anything.

I did that with the last 3 BMWs. I bought a CPO E61 535xi with the complex N54 twin turbo I6, CPO E90 M3 with the high revving S65 V8 and CPO F90 M5. CPO dropped from 2 additional years to just 1 somewhere along the way, but I was able to try out the cars for a couple of years with little risk. Kept the first 2 for 10 years and have had the F90 for 3 years and plan to keep it for at least another few years. I DIY all the maintenance and repairs out of warranty as well as all the mods, but the growing complexity of higher end BMWs is making that more challenging.

Early this year I bought a 2021 F90 with 32k miles. Very good service and repair history, and judging by speed and fuel economy metrics, it had mostly highway miles. Pretty happy so far. But that was barely over 10k miles per year. It's a lot for this car, but not high mileage.
I had a 2007 997TT that I bought in 2012 with 80k miles. THAT is high miles. Ran perfectly for the 3 years I had it, though I only put 6k miles in that time. |

I have an M5 Comp built in Oct. 2019. Bought it new in February 2020 (good month, year ). Now I have 125K KM (~78K Miles). I also did a stage 1 + OPF Delete at 100K KM (62K miles). It still runs like in day one, and I used it properly: daily driver, track days, burnouts, drifts, commuting, long-drive roadtrips.
I had absolutely no issue with it, I have changed only tyres (A LOT!), brakes, and the regular maintenance (filters, oil, etc). I'm always warming it up before sending it, and also, I'm cooling it before shutting it down. So don't worry about high mileage, if it had good maintenance, it will last a lot. Cheers. |

Thinking about buying a 2019 with 57k miles, looking at carfax looks like previous owners did oil change every 10k miles. Also there is a lot of service on the car ride height system repaired/adjusted, is that a concern?

If it all got resolved, then no. Particularly if the last time that stuff was touched was a while ago. If the reports run right up until now or when the warranty expired, that may be more concerning. 10k miles per oil change is fine. Not great, but not a problem. The F90 I bought had it done every 8k miles or so.

Glad I found this post. After doing endless research on these , i'm very close to pulling the trigger on an LCI . Luck of the draw semi-locally , a 1 owner with 65k popped up . Oil was done between 6-8500mi. its whole life .
Saw a couple posts on an f90 fb group - about rod bearing wear on these. A little bit of skewed responses , likely blown out of proportion. Didn't think this was an issue with these esp. in stock form . Which I plan on leaving it that way. Is this a concern to anyone on these ? |

Yes, my current tank has 30k km and its already showing synthoms of leaking (dry coolant on seals).
EVERY F90 is going to have the tank fail, 100% there is no escape, its just a bad design and unavoidable due to the huge heat this engine produces. Luckily if you pay attention to it, you can catch it early and its cheap and easy to replace (or free under warranty). |
