Just saw this from Dinan Engineering.
Both the M550i and the F90 M5 have AWD and virtually have the same exact transmission too. So maybe it's worth it save yourself $30,000 and just tune up an M550i instead? Unless you plan on tracking either car, then the F90 M5 is the better choice no contest. What say you?

Building both cars to approximately the same level (same quality of leather, same features, etc...), I ended up with a M550i build worth $87,825 and a M5 build of $109,600, so realistically it is a difference of $21,775 between the cars without tuning. Looking at Dinan's pricing, you are probably spending at least $3,000 more if you do the work yourself (+150hp is not trivial to achieve), so that brings it to a $19,000 price difference.
I think I'll take the M5 with an M-tuned xDrive, M suspension, M seats, and 4/50 factory warranty for $19,000 more in that case. I think the more interesting question is whether to buy an M5 or an Alpina B5. Of course, if you only care about power and specify a stripped down M550i, the price difference is larger, but then what's the point? I like my nice leather, ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, adjustable suspension, and Apple Carplay integration in my car If someone only cares about very large horsepower figures, they can get a Challenger Hellcat. But - back to the point - the M5 is much more than its engine. From its chassis to the individual suspension tuning controls, to the brakes...So it depends what you want. Luxury with a bunch more power - go M550ix tuned (not necessarily by Dinan) - if you want performance luxury GT - I would say M5. |

But I'm sure we'll be seeing the same old stuff of tuners out in the world somewhere posting videos of tunes making 900whp on some dyno for the F90 M5 on stock internals. Wash, rinse, repeat from the F10 generation to the F90. Many of these tuners just want your cash and could care less if you bomb your motor. But hey, if you're gonna bomb your motor, might as well do it on a cheaper M550i.

However, Caddy just released new information on their future plans with their cars and motors and it's for lack of a better word, "astonishing." We may need only wait a couple of years and CT6 V-Sport will be a far better performance car than an M550i. I'm already guessing the next gen CTS-V will be north of 700hp too and will be easily tuned to over 1,000hp since it'll come from the factory with a forged motor. Crazy times ahead for sure!

Here's Parker (don't judge me) doing some semi-scientific test runs (I say semi because he's on some hills...no telling if he's doing these tests on a flat surface). Seems like the M550i just can't launch as hard as the M5.
Enjoy. EDIT: If you want to skip his annoying drivel, "testing" starts at ~14:30. Last edited by mirob; 03-23-2018 at 01:55 PM.. |
