wireless charging tray
I have tried 2 Iphone 12 Pro in the wireless charging tray. Most of the time, the light goes blue when I put the phone in, but then turns red after a short time. The phones are getting very hot with even the red light on, but they actually discharge while on the tray. They work just fine on our $10 wireless pads at home. Anybody else having this issue?

Seems strange. It works well for my wife's Xs Pro and my Xs Pro Max (after I remove the case so it will fit (grrrr)).
Is your phone in a case and if so, have you tried removing it from the case to see if the case is interfering with the charge? |

Yes I tried without the case. Makes no difference. It works fine with an Android phone we tried today, so it seems to be an Apple problem.

Bummer. Since my Xs Max won't fit in the tray, I got a USB-C to Lightning cable for the center console and I plug in there. Not quite as convenient as wireless, but it does charge and keeps the phone secure while driving.

Nope, my Galaxy Note 9 doesn't charge very well on the wireless either. It just fits if I remove the case, but the charging sucks and it gets super hot. I plug it in instead. The M5's wireless charging is a real disappointment compared to my previous car, a C63

My large iphone with the case on does the same thing as the OP relates -- starts out blue and then changes to red not long after. I can wiggle it around a bit and it will go back to blue but then change to red shortly after. Had not tried yet without the case, which would allow the phone to fit the pad better. Using USB to charge instead.

Got the same problem. My dealer changed the tray under warranty. It kept the same behaviour. Takes around an hour until it gets hot and then phone stops working. Then my dealer did a statement with BMW concerning the problem and the answer was, that if phone is used while being charged it will keep doing the same. So conclusion is you do not use it with carplay app while simultaneously charging it. Hope it is clear. If you want to simultaneously charge and use it then do it over the cable.

Doesn't anyone see the chip shortage as an all-too-convenient excuse for BMW to pull wireless charging across the board from 22's? I made this argument in another thread and was piled on for the heresy of questioning BMW's gospel and motives.

Given the crappy performance of the wireless charger in the M5, I would gladly take the $250 discount BMW is now giving for removing it. I would then spend $39 for an Apple MagSafe charger and put it in my center console.

Leave the grain of salt away and better try it by yourself. Then perhaps you would change your mind.

Never had an issue with it using my 11pro max. Charging and using car play. My 12 max never fit so I've used a 12" usb-a to usb-c and connected 3rd party mag safe to a pro clip. Works for me.

Not sure if this is the problem, but I believe is the mag safe functionality on iPhones that is creating this problem with certain cars but not all. I have a M5 2018 and my iPhone 12 pro charges wirelessly without any problems while using CarPlay. When I put the same phone on my wife's car that is a 2022 (not BMW) it does not charge and the car responds that there is metal between the phone and the charging pad. My wife has an older iPhone without mag safe and her iPhone charges on her car fine without any problems. So it seems that the mag safe functionality along with some newer car wireless charging pads are having problems.

With my iPhone 12 Pro Max, I have given up on the charging tray. I sucked it up and purchased a MagSafe charger and stuck it in the center console. Works great, but is slightly more cumbersome than just dropping phone in the tray.
