First 'proper' watch..

Watches, for what its worth I will give you my take on them. I bought myself a Rolex 6 years ago, cost me 3K and I enjoy wearing it as much now as I did when I first got it. My wife could never understand why I spent so much (some would argue that it isn’t that much) on a watch, that was until I bought her a Cartier for her birthday one year – she absolutely loved it and enjoys it every day she wears it.

A guy who works for me thought it was a load of rubbish to spend a fortune on quality watches – that was until he recently bought himself a beautiful IWC, he can now see the light.

It is a clear case of what suits – each to their own etc. But it is funny that the only people who ‘don’t get watches’ are the people that don’t have them, it’s the same as those people who think it is stupid to spend money on a car which costs more than a Ford, Vauxhall etc. I think in both cases those people are either slightly jealous or lack a degree of style

depends on the model, what you pay for them and if someone else wants it ... but i get my return back in happiness

Ermmm - a "nice car" is usually quicker, more reliable and handles better than a lower rent one. An expensive watch doesn't tell the time any better (in fact often the opposite).

Subtle posh watches are okay but brash shiny watches just look naff IMO and if anything, show a lack of style - very footballer IMO. As for jealous - I'm sure Kadesad can "afford" a flashy watch as can I - we just don't think there's any point.

I sometime see blokes trying to show off their watches (always pulling sleeve back, constantly checking the time,etc) and think - oh dear.

It's the standard kit of a social climber with a mid range BMW/Audi with all the bodykit, ponsy hair and a Ted Baker outfit. Trying too hard and failing.

Jealously it's not as if I wanted one I would simply buy one. Style, then I guess I wouldn't be driving an M3.

I don't think it's simply down to that assumption though. I guess in hindsight it's right what the majority are saying, 'it's just right for them', who I am to argue if you want to spend £1XXX to tell the time!

Admittedly some diamond encrusted fu*k off bling bling watches are truly vulgar and are normally worn by idiots driving yellow lambos in Porto Banus (see the connection). But classy watches worn by people who are wearing for there own benefits don’t normally jump out and say look at me.

When I go to a good restaurant, or out for the night, and have made the effort I think a good watch complements a decent suit, decent jeans & shirt etc. When I got married and had the photos taken while signing the docs I don’t think a Casio G string would have felt as good as a my Rolex.

Again – purely opinion based.

It's no wonder you're always getting banned, 335diesel. In just one post you've said that everyone buying an expensive watch is a wannabe footballer, a social climber and has a desparate look of trying too hard, as is anyone with a mid-range BMW or Audi. I'm not quite sure where you get the ammunition to make such broad assumptions.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't dream of paying four figures for a watch either but I wouldn't be as condescending to those that do.

As for "pulling back the sleeve to constantly check the time", that's rather similar to internet posters who go to great lengths to explain, perpetually, how perfectly idyllic their life is, wouldn't you say?

It's fun exchanging opinions don't you think? Well I do. Take my posts with a lorry load of salt and join in - don't get all huffy and outraged.

It's also rare to have someone else agree with me... ;-)

Caaaaalm down - yes you think I bang on about an idyllic lifestyle (if I had an M5 Touring then maybe...) but I don't see it - it's just different. Some/many would hate it here, get bored, hate stoving their M Sport spoiler on the driveway, want i-drive, etc, etc. Suits us but not everyone - so what?

Some subtle Panerais (apparently not the best of movements though) and Patek Phillipe DO look classy but they are rare spendy. "Mid" range flashy watches (a lot of Rolexes, Breitlings, Tags, etc) all look too shiny and blingy to me.

As for the wedding - I didn't wear a watch. After all, it wasn't as if timing was of any importance... ;-)

It's Titanium (ie dull finish) and I usually wear it on the rubber strap, so not blingy at all.
Not a fan of TAG's but, hey, if you want one get one and enjoy it!

I love my watches! I have a small collection of 'nice' watches and the ones I have bought in the past have went up in price. e.g, I bought a breitling Navitimer fighter edition and one sold a few months back on ebay for circa £1k more than I paid for it, my money didnt gain that much on the bank over the past year thats for sure.
I bought one in December there aswell, a breitling Navitimer world, beautiful watch, What I paid for it (discounted) and what the present rrp in ernest and jones is approx £2k a difference. Again, my money didnt do that in 7 months in the bank. I know I wont get the full price for this one but I should have some sorta gain if i were to sell it.

As for the carrera, I have a leather strapped one, and it lovely, gets looks where ever it goes and keep time in my watch winder with no real issues, sometimes wanders a minute or 2 but nothing to worry about.

It's just personal preference as to how one wishes to present themselves.

Personally, I stopped wearing a watch years ago simply because when I was a kid I went through at a rate of knot. One is lying at the bottom of King Georges Resovoir actually

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, if you want to wear an expensive ass watch and can afford to do so go for it. If you think it's a waste of money, then fine but no need to put a downer on anyone else who want to buy one.

To back up my earlier statement. Call your Tag dealer and ask what tolerance it has.

From memory i was told *it could lose up to 20 seconds per day and still be within tolerance.

If you do a google, lots of people have had problems after a service, with them losing up to a minute a day.

I have had a Rado for 15 years and it's not missed a beat bar battery changes, and me breaking the pin in the strap. Its bullet proof (i used to rack servers etc wearing it) due to it's construction, and still looks as good as new. But its a style that's not for everyone.
