I ordered my car in May and got in early July - 325 w/ idrive.

I finally took it into the dealership Tuesday since they told me they can fix the Mp3 issue. They updated all of my modules. It took 34 hours approx!! The guys at the dealership were surprised. I wasn't thanx to this forum .
Any way, the Mp3 fix is indeed something you need to ask for in addition to the software update.

I'm not sure if I got any other functionality. I couldn't find any when I browsed through the menu.

However, the iDrive overall is more responsive and now I can play Mp3s. so it's all good! oh and I have noticed that the engine now turns on at a higher rev. It's not a problem but it's a minor detail I wouldn't have noticed if not for this forum.

Cheers,

Thanks for this great post! So we have one North American member confirm this for their car. Any US people yet?

I called to get the CIP 20 update today and the lady on the phone was giving me issues asking why I need such a "tedious task"

I explained to her that I also need the Mp3 capabilities.

She made me give her a list of the reasons I need the latest update and will let me know if it warrants an upgrade of software.

Park Ave BMW service SUCKS

My question is, do I NEED CIP 20.0 to get the Mp3 compatibility? I understand the Mp3 has to be requested seperately but does it work if the CIP is not up to 20.0?

My car goes in on the 30th for the update I predict 2-3 days. Since I had all the TSIB info they couldn't really give me a hard time. I am working the intermittent Bluetooth not pairing to get the CIP20 update and since they are already doing that adding the MP3 and fixing the f-ing tick in my seatbelt and the heat issue. I love German engineering. Part of me thinks they should build the driving components via German engineering and then either hire Japanese or American electronics engineers to design the software and components... would be sweet if it had some Apple hardware in there!!

My car is in for it as we speak. Dealer said they knew what I was asking for (although I brought them a copy of E90Fleet's post just in case) and said it should be ready by the end of the day. So far I'm at 5 hours and counting...

We'll see if it works...

well I asked for "an update to add Mp3 capability". the guy at the service department said he knew exactly what I needed.
He also mentioned that he has to have two separate request. one to update the overall software (I'm assuming CIP20) and one specifically requesting the activation of MP3 capability.

hope this helps.

since it's taking 2 full days to update a single car, I can understand why the dealers are not liking this. However, they shouldn't refuse and should do it without questions. Bmw is paying for this any way!!!

The software update & mp3 retrofit are both needed for mp3s to work, but 2 days is excessive I think. I had this update carried out this week in the UK & it took 3-4 hours to complete.

Update :

Just picked up my car from the dealer, it took approximately 6 hours from the time I dropped it off until the time I picked it up.

Mp3s work perfectly now, EXCEPT that for some reason it doesn't show the full title of my songs unless I'm actually playing the song (kind of annoying - does anyone know how to fix this? I use Nero to burn the cd's).

I-drive also seems to work a bit faster now, but maybe I'm just imagining it.

You should be able to rename them on your computer before you burn

I think it has to do with the ID tags. The BMW system only recognizes ID3 version 1.x tags. I don’t know about Nero, I use Itunes. The Itunes default is version 2.x. If you use Itunes you have to make sure that you select "Convert ID3 Tags" under the "Advanced" menu and change to version 1.x.

Dude the service bulletin basically says that if the customer "complaints" then the mp3 part of the update must be installed.

I believe the CD & DVD slot only shows 8 characters which is why no full songs.
MY CD Changer shows 25 characters & shows full songs unless long titles.

On the heat issue...make sure they know how to remove your trim (it doesn't require tools).

On my car, they used screwdrivers to pry the aluminum trim up. Then, they didn't have the parts. That was 60 days ago. They are going to replace it. But I have to wait until mid-February.

Just in case anybody STILL has doubts about the mp3 thingy, I spoke to the guys in the service department and they confirmed that mp3 playback WILL be included in the software update in my car next Thursday.

Yeah they didn't question the Mp3 part, just the CIP 20 part.

My question was do I NEED the CIP 20 in order to get the Mp3 retrofit?

Can people in US with the new 20.1 update take some pics with the mp3 fix?

I'm currently out of the country and plan to give my car to service the day I get back.
