Battery Replacement

Would love feedback on how many years before members replace their vehicle’s battery; additionally, do you stay OEM? Appreciate the advice.

Mine was an M3 not an M5

Their are some variables with battery life. The OEM battery can last 7 years.

I’m in Connecticut my F80 M3 was 100% stock garge kept and driven about 13,000 miles per year serviced at dealer 100% of the time.

The battery was 6 years old when I sold the car. BMW dealer said the battery was at 75%.

Car had 72,000 miles and was in EXCELLENT condition.

I had to replace my battery in Sept 2022, car is 2018 MY. I had about 43000 miles on it. Cost me $2000. Mine had a bad cell I suspect. BMW originally said they would comp me on it, but since i bought the battery on my own from my Stealership parts department, "they" could not figure out how to reimburse me. F(*&)*&) Lying Sacks of S(*&(*.

I have read that the Lithium Ion battery can be changed to a regular AGM battery (?$400) with a reprogram of the cars ECU, but my stealer would not even consider calling Germany to ask about it. I suspect eventually this will be the norm. As car's age out and batteries need to be replaced the supply will not keep up. I was able to snag one of TWO batteries in the US at the time.

My dad had his replaced at a similar age because the internal control circuit showed a fault. BMW covered that one. As far as we could determine he snagged the other one LOL.

My 2018 M5 at 55k miles is on the original lithium battery and I have had no issues yet. Hope it lasts another year or 2 or more.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I’m going on year five with mine, thankfully no issues, but as part of preventative maintenance, I wanted to ask

Don't know...but the UK BMW used car program presales checklist requires an 80% state of charge (SoC).
If less then a full recharge should be performed.
After that if still under 80% SoC then further tests (listed in a different document) should be completed.
So basically if less than 80% SoC the vehicle cannot be sold.

The battery on my 2023 car apparently didn't reach the threshold and was replaced.
Outrageously not covered under warranty so the selling dealership had to pay for it as I'd only had the car a short while. No stock in the UK so had to be ordered from Germany @£960.

IIUC its important not to let Li batteries discharge too much...so if left standing unused for a period of time, connect the correct type of battery charge to trickle charge on a regular basis.
