Better to lease or buy an M5?
I tend to own my cars for quite some time. Looking to upgrade to an M5 from my 2013 550 I bought back in 2012. My extended warranty ended last year so it’s time to move on.
Given all the new tech in the f90 M5 is it better to lease the car as opposed to purchase? Both my SA and CA advise to lease. However I prefer to keep the vehicle 7-8 years with the extended warranty. Even with the warranty, there’s always the headache of not having your cars for days at the shops for repairs. This leads to the reliability for the f90 M5 which I know it’s too early in its lifecycle, 2018 to present, to know. I was lucky with my f10 didn’t have much issues until year 5 and on with minor repairs which were covered by the warranty. How many of you decided to lease vs purchase? Or vice versa? |

All depends on the time horizon. For 5+ years buy, for 3 years or less lease. In between, do the math with current programs and don't forget the tax implications. If you are going to do another 7 years, buy it.

I have always explored the lease option when acquiring a new vehicle. When I purchased my 2015 BMW M3 (F80) in July of 2014 I went with a purchase over a lease with the intent of keeping the car for 8-10 years. I still have a 2008 Tacoma that I purchased new in 2008 and my wife is still driving her 2012 VW GTI that we purchased new in October of 2011.
I was never a fan of the exhaust sound of our F80 M3. So when the F90 came out and after several tests drivers I parted ways with the F80 and transitioned to the F90 in August of 2018. Both the F80 and F90 are weekend drivers and are low mileage vehicles. We had the F80 for 4 years and 1 month and it had 16k miles and the F90 after 2 years and 3 months has just over 7k miles. I went with a purchase over a lease for the F90. By June of the next year it will be paid off and I am thinking I will keep the car for the long haul. The only minor negative I have about the F90 is the size of the vehicle. Again this is a very minor negative and I miss the size of our departed F80. |

I was always a "purchase and drive it into the ground" kind of guy.
Sold my e39 with 259,000 years ago and all I had to put in it was a half shaft. That said, Euro cars don't have the reliability anymore. EPA and turbos killed that. Buy Japanese, Lease Euro. I've leased the past two BMWs and won't look back. I look forward to getting a new color next May! Also, I drive it as intended with track days and hard use. One brake job was on me, but venturis, vent valves, CELs, and passenger seat sensors are on BMW. And if you own a business or are self employed, you're picking up the business tax deduction. I don't pay a nickel when I pick up the car. Roll it all into the lease payment, tax, tags, fees, first month's payment. It's 50% off! |

I found myself buying a new car every 3 years as I commute 100mi round trip work (DC area and live in the burbs). I bought a PHEV to take advantage of the HOV lanes exemption so went shopping for a higher end pleasure car. Leasing just made more sense given I'll look forward to a new car in two years. BMW has great lease incentives too. Only downside is I live in MD where the all the taxes are paid up front.

Found mine (after looking for 2 months) with 3K miles on it, got 30K off for basically a new car. Car was completely wrapped with PPF ($6K) and other extras (tint etc)....all free to me. Love this car.
Go with slightly used and buy it. I plan to keep this car for over 5 years because I honestly cannot think of another car I would rather have. Going on 2 years in this one. Wouldn't change a thing.

Doubt that statement. Why don't you quit driving your dads M5 and lease one then Trevor?

I buy a car every year to two, but this M5 is the first one I'm commiting to have over a year. In my case, since I was swapping cars so frequently, it really didn't matter if I had a lease or not. That hat being said, if you plan to keep over 3 years, then financing or buying outright might be better. If you plan to keep a car for no more than 2-3 years, leasing is the way. If you plan to keep 1 year, then it really doesn't matter.
Hope that helps

Umm lease for sure. If you actually care about the numbers. If you're filthy rich then it probably doesn't matter anyway. But these cars take a bath the first 3 years.

I decided to Lease.
These cars are incredibly expensive to fix after the warranty expires. With a lease, the car is always covered by original warranty. And you will always have a car that's new. Get in while it's new, use up the best part of its lifespan, and then turn it back in before it becomes a problem. |

I think once you enter this price point for a car logic is out the window. How is it logical to have a never ending car payment because you want to drive cars you believe are unreliable and are afraid to own it past the warranty. Just get a four cylinder corolla and through your cares to the wind and keep your dollars. Is that not more sensible? So why do people try to make others believe their decision to lease a car decade after decade is sensible? None of this is a sound financial decision so why try to pass it off as such?

I don't know whether it is a UK problem. M cars with the exception of M2 are much more expensive to lease (in the UK, lease mean rental without option of buying the car off) compared to PCP and hire purchase

Back on topic, if you're going to have it for 2-3 years lease. If you're going to hold it for longer then buy a CPO/used one. They depreciate too hard to justify a new purchase. |
