So is there a sense of this being an earlier build issue? Mine was built June 5. 318 miles in.
What happens if I’m on a road trip and this issue comes up? Does it get handled via the closest dealer to where I am? |

The vehicle is under warranty so any BMW dealer can handle it.

Update (6/29/23): I just spoke to the case manager and he's still waiting to get information on the case!! OMG after 3 weeks, BMW NA doesn't know anything!! It feels like they don't want to talk to me.. so I just hired a lemon law lawyer to help me out. Sending them all the info later today, it's kind of a no brainer.. if they take the case, BMW will pay their fees as the law states. The goal.. full refund or car replacement. It will take a couple of months but since they don't want to talk to me, that's my only path right now.

Well, yes any dealer will have to handle it.. but NO, don't do that. You can still drive your car, and let the dealer closest to your home to handle it. There are no parts to fix this and they will keep the car until they get them.

Mine (week 15 build) has been in the shop for almost three weeks. They have ordered a new "combined charging unit module" for it and hope to have installed within 10 days. I don't think they are completely sure that is the problem. The dealership has been kind to work with and has me in a very nice loaner.

I would think driving your car with the "Check Engine Light" on, lets say 500 miles to get home, might be an excuse to negate the warranty.

My dealership recommended the same because the car wouldn’t charge with 240v. I had no problem charging with 120v. But I had more issues like electric motor shutting down when I’m accelerating beyond 40kph (~25mph), and drivetrain suddenly shutting down when stopped at a light while driving in hybrid mode etc. I was always wondering about the cooling issue like the other posts because even when trickle charging via 120v, my car would run the fan like crazy under the hood. |

We haven't heard of any battery exploding because of that... yet. If you want to be extra careful, then by all means, take the car to any dealership and join the wait and BMW doesn't care movement. |

Oh they know!, Someone up the chain knows. They simply don't have the part to replace the faulty ones. They are producing cars, they just have a huge problem getting replacements.

(Update 6/30):
She's back in my garage. It sat in the lot all week and I have no more answers today then I had then. That's right. Nothing was diagnosed and I have the car back after they were kind enough to reset the check engine light. I have no explanation from BMW NA or from the dealership. They couldn't recreate the problem. They told me to bring it back if it happens again. The only theory is maybe there is something wrong with by charge cable which I plug into a standard 110V outlet. If I get the light again, they want me to also bring in the cable. Not very reassuring, but the car is behaving fine. Last edited by D-DUBB-99; 06-30-2023 at 10:05 AM.. |

Just got home from factory delivery of my 50e (delivery date 6/21/23). Everything good until I hit 1630 miles and check engine light turned on with 70 miles to go until home. Made it home ok. Tried charging with my newly installed 240v level 2 charger and no dice. Seemed like it was working for about 30 seconds then red charge light and error message on screen. 120v charger seems to be working with what seems to be a fan humming away. 33 hours before full charge! Going to try a different known good level 2 charger tomorrow (it could be my installation of the lvl 2 charger, but the charger is reporting no errors).
Not to mention I caught a stone in the windshield and cracked it. Fun times! Edit: charging issue was with my electrical circuit…all good now. Last edited by David3; 07-05-2023 at 07:29 PM.. |

Saw someone mentioning about the 50e issues on Reddit so I came over. Wow, I didn't expect this many people having to experience it. I'm looking to switch to something new from my '19 GLC 350e and was really interested in the new 50e, now after reading your posts I'm not so sure any more.
My hybrid GLC only has about 11 miles of electric range and it has had 3 or 4 electrical issues that required repairs. The most recent one being a short fault in the high voltage battery system about 1000 miles after the 50k-mile warranty expired, fortunately my local dealer who handled all my services worked something out with MBUSA and only charged me half price on the parts (about $500 or $700, can't remember) after initially quoting $3k+. I want to get a new car before something bad happens again. I drive from LA to Mammoth Mountain a lot during the winter and that's 300 miles one-way, so I'm not quite ready to switch to a BEV yet. Although I would still very much like to have another PHEV with longer range, the issues posted here got me thinking maybe I should order a M50i instead. |

^ Welcome to the forum. You have to do what you are comfortable with but keep in mind the vehicles that are having issues are a small percentage of those in use. Forums such as this one amplify problems since folks are more likely to post that they are having an issue rather than everything is fine.
Any vehicle can have an issue, as your MB has shown, and manufactures work through that to eliminate the problem part or design. In this case it seems like most of the issues are related to a bad batch pf parts but we don't have enough data to know for sure. Good luck with your decision.

It charged fine with 120V over 33 hrs with the fan on all night long. As soon as I connect to 240V wouldn’t charge. |

I only ask because in my Tesla it has a provision to change the charging amperage. Again. Could be far fetched. |
