Had to purchase a new engine oil cooler

Ok for you guys who are lowered like me I highly recommend getting something made to protect the engine cooler. Maybe IND can help?
It's right behind the front bumper, exposed and not protected and low as F. Not sure how safe this is in the first place having it exposed and as low as it is but I'm not an engineer.
Stealer tried to charge me $2100 to swap to a new one but got them down to $1300. They can't even tell me if my engine needs to be replaced until they put in the new oil cooler and try to crank the engine.
Btw from something puncturing my oil cooler to the engine shutting off and not even cranking anymore was 4 mins which is not a lot of time to find a safe place to pull over.

so let me confirm, you (and I) are lowered about 3/4th of an inch on the H&R's and because of the height you got damage? Or do you think this would have happened no matter what?

Not sure but I'm sure that 3/4" didn't help. Either way it needs a cover or plate there to keep that cooler safe.

We have an oil cooler guard coming out for this very reason. Fall-line used iND's F90 for all of the R&D.

I'm sure most of us didn't realize the extent to which our oil coolers are exposed to road debris. Of course if you choose to lower your car, your risk is enhanced.

My question would be, can the cooler be protected without screwing up air flow?

Edit: I see in the previous post something aftermarket, so that will be interesting.

That’s very exposed. You have to wonder why BMW designed it that way.

It really surprises me that after the issues with the f80, that they would do this again. That oil cooler is really exposed in that position under the car like that, with NO mesh in front of it. I understand they want increased cooling capacity but that is a bad design in my opinion.

Yes, I was surprised to see it - I hadn't noticed it before. Seems quite vulnerable - no protection. I think the radiators facing the front could be damaged as well. There's some protection there, but it's fairly minimal.

Was it not warrantied because you were lowered or is this not a warranty issue period?

I recall over on the E63 forum something similar happening although it was to the front cooler and it was not warrantied either.

It looks like you hit some sort of rod or a branch....you can see where it wedged behind the cooler and pushed it out a bit. It’s not like the coils were pushed in, as you would expect when making contact with the road.

Yeah it was piece of wood or something couldn't avoid it and since it's impact damage it's not covered under warranty.
Should know tomorrow if I need a new engine or not as a result.

In that case, stock height won't help at all.
I think it can be a case against BMW and/or CalTrans maybe?

The only way you are guaranteed safe against road debris is when you are driving a raised SUV.

A few years back, my sister's one week old car got a gas tank punctured from road debris.
And it was stock height.
I told her to bring it to the city to get reimbursement, I am not sure whether she did or not.

Second thought, more lower probably safer for the bottom oil cooler.
Since the debri will get caught on the bumper first.

Better yet, if you have a front lip.

Man you have had some unfortunate problems with your m5, Quickburn. I hope this is the last of it! I feel your pain though. The same thing happened to my f80 and it required engine replacement, so I hope that isn't the case for you.

I just took redelivery of my f90 on Friday after completing eurodelivery last month. I was running some errands over the weekend and a huge tree branch fell on my car and dinged up the bumper and hood along with a bunch of scratches and broken plastic grill. Hadn't even driven 10 miles since having it stateside! I hope you get quick resolution!

Vegas bet is you did not wipe a bearing in 4 minutes of drain out. Fingers crossed for you.

Until you impact something with the lip and it pushes the bumper into the oil cooler and breaks it.
I drove cars that are much lower
Knowing where and how to drive makes a difference, beside it's nothing that can't be fixed.
If I would be afraid of that, I would drive rusty pick up truck. Lol

Engine seized new engine it is for me. Car will be out of service for about 6 weeks if I'm lucky Nothing I can do about it. From puncture to shut down of engine was 4 minutes and 0.5 miles.

Mate that sucks, hope it’s not too expensive. Do insurance cover things like that?

I’m now scared to drive mine. No way I could afford an engine replacement out of pocket.

Today I Learned:
Any oil pressure warning on the dash means stop and turn off the motor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, traffic conditions be damned. I'd rather back up traffic for miles than have to pay for a new engine out of pocket.

Sorry to hear about your troubles OP, this really sucks.

Incredible. I really hate that for you. I’ve blown oil filters out on the dyno due to excessive oil pressure and dumped 8qts at 7500 rpm with zero damage.

I really hate that happened.
