This Geigo looks good if you plan to keep your car past 3 years.

i was on USAA for years, like 13, but recently switched to Geico for the new M5 because:

- a boatload cheaper per year for better coverage
- mechanical breakdown insurance (i bought my car and will drive it until the wheels fall off)

USAA is good service and used to be super competitive. i was shocked how much cheaper geico was and its not like they are some small, fly by night company

Part of the insurance decision isn’t just the price, it’s how they treat you when claims are made.

State Farm is pretty expensive now because they pass all the marketing/advertising expense for “Jake from State Farm” and the discount double check with Aaron Rodgers and Chris Paul to their insureds.

USAA isn’t cheap but they take great care of their insureds.

I have priced them all, and evaluated their care of their own insureds when claims are made. I’ve gone with Erie for a couole of years (switched from State Farm).

Highly ranked by JD power as well.

You picked the best carrier out there. Best claims service, best price.

Ask any body shop who the best carrier is...always Erie.

In general....

The biggest thing is reading what your insurance covers and the state law. Cheap isn't always the best, insurance is based on numerous factors.

-Risk, Repair costs/complexity, State mandates, all the underinsured people, and the deductibles/ options you pick.

While GEICO is cheap. It comes with cons, aka they "want" you to use their repair shops. Some insurance companies won't pay for OEM quality work or parts. Also the dollar amounts of what they payout aren't high vs. other options.

Sometimes you get what you pay for when it comes to insurance as 90% are all trying to pay out as least amount of money as possible during a claim.

I've got Auto-Owners its $3200 a year but Million/Million with 100 dollars deductible/ full glass/ excess medical and spelled out OEM parts and work.

They are more of a top Tier Insurance Carrier. I think Pure (or could be Chubb) actually requires you to have your home insured with them, and it must be over 1 million in value.

Just as an FYI, you have full control to take your car wherever YOU choose. DO NOT LET an insurance company force you to take it to where they want. In some states, this is illegal. It's called "steering"

Agree, however not all states nor policies are the same. Some limit options and the max they will pay and what the adjustor thinks.

I worked in insurance and it's one of never enough until you realize you don't have enough.

Just review all options and don't base everything on the cheapest price as they get you in the fine print.

I guess I should feel good about my USAA at $685/6mo.. We have multi-car, with 1million liability, and I only drive 7500 miles yr.. Plus I'm an old coot, and don't drive in any large cities. We also have our home insured with them.

Insurance is highly localized. Just because an insurer is competitive in one city or state does not mean they will be everywhere. They are always managing exposure looking to increase or decrease (yes this is true) the number of policies in any given area.

I would agree that you want to go with the company offering the best service. When you need it, you need it and you will not be in the head space to chase stuff down.

As an example of "you never know", my closest friend also happens to be my agent. He had a leak in a pipe in the ceiling of his rental. No big deal, company comes out and places fans around the house to dry everything off. By law they have to check for asbestos and sure enough the pipes were wrapped in it. When they brought in the fans it blew the asbestos EVERYWHERE in the house. Again per California law, anything testing over 5 ppm had to be removed and destroyed. All of the furniture, electronics, clothing, beds, etc gone. No choice, you can't fight it, they just lock you out of the house until it is remediated. $100K to replace everything and 4 months of temporary rentals (at $27K/month) later they were able to move back in.

This geico maintenance plan peaked my interest. Has anyone here used it? Did it raise your premiums similar to using insurance too many times or other reasons?

What’s your PD limit? I’m very familiar with Erie. You can PM me if you’d like.

I am a member of multiple auto forums all under same screen name. I’ve posted over and over extolling the virtues of Geico MBI coverage. I’m a Geico customer, zero other connection, for over 30 years. I’ve had MBI since its inception over 20 years ago. I’ve used it probably 10 times. Here is a partial list:

New tranny and clutch on Mazda 3. $4500

New DVD nav unit on Acura MDX. $1200

New AC compressor on Dodge Caravan $1500

New adjustable shock on MDX as it was leaking. Required replacing both although only one was bad. $800

New driveshaft on VW Touareg in about 2008. That is approximately when they began to limit the mileage at 100k. For the first many years it was 7 years unlimited miles. The driveshaft went at 112k miles. When I called they said your coverage ended at 100k miles. I said since when? They looked and could not prove or substantiate they ever notified me of that change and so good-willed the repair.

Cost: $1200

In each instance above, Geico would call the dealer or licensed shop, speak to them about the repair needed, and approve it and pay with their credit card directly over the phone. I paid $250 each time.

Only in the instance of the tranny on the Mazda3 did they opt, which is their right, to supply the part as in that case they were able to get one cheaper.

In no instance did my rates go up as a result of availing myself of that coverage.

In NY where I’ve always lived, glass coverage is part of comprehensive and zero deductible, although I have $1,000 deductible otherwise.

Geico is not cheap however, and I do have my home with them.

My Porsche 911, which stickered for $123k (10k more than my M5) was about $500 per year less than my M5.

I’m 63 and have a flawless driving record with Geico for over the 30+ years and yet the M5 is close to 2k a year. That’s outrageous.

Rates are also based on your FICO score.

There was recently an article in the N.Y. Times about those dongles used to monitor your driving and how unfair they can be. If you brake hard for a yellow light instead of running it, you will get a demerit for hard braking. I’d never want that in spite of discount. However, the day will come when it’s not optional. That will suck.
