My 2022 M5 Comp Has Arrived. The Pros & Cons Of It

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi Guys,

My 2022 M5 Competition has arrived. Here are photos and specs along with my view on the Pros and Cons of the LCI.

As for my car's build:

Exterior:
Donnington Grey Metallic
20" M Y-spoke forged bi-color wheels, style 789M with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

Interior:
Full Merino Black leather
Aluminum Dark Carbon Structure trim

Packages:
Competition Package
Driving Assistance Plus Package
Executive Package
Carbon Ceramic Brakes
M Driver’s Package
Bower and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System

Positives Of the LCI:

1. I had a 2019 M5 Comp for 3 years and the LCI has a much more compliant ride and is smoother in all drive modes. The dampers which come from the M8 make this car a dream to drive around the city, canyons and the twisties.

2. The Carbon Ceramic brakes in the pre- LCI were very grabby and to aggressive. In the 2022 the CCB's are much improved and refined. They give great stopping power and give a lot of confidence. A must addition for any M5 purchase.

3. The gear box and gear changes are improved and the car feels faster IMHO. The car reviewer Joe Achilles did 0 to 60 in 2.9 secs and my seat of the pants says BMW made the LCI quicker.

4. The iDrive 7 is faster and there are added features that make it an improved system. The self- parking feature is also improved and makes parking around town a breeze. I also use the backup assist every day.

5. Steering- The steering feel in my LCI feels more direct. One thing you have to do is disable the Lane Keep Assist that comes standard. This gives you more control and feel of the wheel.

6. Styling- The rear styling of the car is much improved with the 3- dimentional tail lights and new rear bumper. The front of the car is another thing, more on that below.

Negatives of the LCI:

1. The sound of the exhaust. My 2019 M5 had such great pops and bangs, and the new car’s exhaust note is quieter. A few guys who have the 2022 M5 CS have stated the same thing. If I were to order again, I would add the M Performance Exhaust.

2. Live Cockpit Professional- I prefer the classic gauges for speedometer and tach.

3. Styling, I love the back of the new M5 but I must admit when looking at the front, I wonder why couldn’t the BMW engineers figure out a way that we could have Laser Lights that could conform to USA regulations?

That being said, I love my 2022 M5 Competition and I have enjoyed driving it immensely! I honestly feel for me this is the best car in the world to drive. I feel very fortunate and blessed to have it in my garage.

Here are photos of the car:

Congratulations!

Very nice spec

Too bad you have not added the sport exhaust.

I'm with you on the Live Cockpit Professional, I cannot get used to this display for the speedometer and tach, Would be great if you could toggle between LCP and the classic gauges. Congrats on your M5!

I echo your comments about the quieter exhaust and the live cockpit. Wish I had the option for the sport exhaust (honestly, it should have been standard on the M5 CS).

For the dash, I'd prefer the analog dials, but I do like the shift lights in the middle of the live dash. That is actually more helpful than when it was just on the tach.

Congratulations on the car Greer. The laser lights with the blue indicator would have been perfect. I would not even care if they were less capable than the Euro version, the look is just cool. I am not sure why they are allowed on the M5CS though.

I agree the car from my stand point it is hard to imagine a car that would suit my wants better than the M5. It just does whatever I want it to do.

Congrats - you may also have one of the only 22's in the US with the B&W sound system. (see thread over in the other section).

"3. The gear box and gear changes are improved and the car feels faster IMHO. The car reviewer Joe Achilles did 0 to 60 in 2.9 secs and my seat of the pants says BMW made the LCI quicker."

It isn't placebo. Around September 2019, they started putting a new transmission in there, the 8HP76, which was upgraded from the 8HP75 that the car launched with. The 8HP76 is what the M8 launched with. It indeed has some upgraded internals and software with faster shifts that garner a 0.1s faster 0-60.

Glad you're enjoying it. I like some of the changes with the LCI, but I'm pleased as punch with my 2019…damping could be softer, but it's rare that it's annoying, at least for me.

Can you give us a video of some revs with your car with sports+ and exhaust button on?

I have an M5 on order and worried about how "muted" people are saying it is

Awesome post all around. Fantastic review & as always, we all love the pictures.

I'm torn between Alpine white & this color. I can't say I have a favorite, but I think both win in their own ways. It compliments the car & its vibe overall without feeling like it's too much. Excellent choice! Congrats

DonTheDon I do not know how to attach a video, but I just went out to my 2021 M5C with only 1400 miles to confirm it still makes the noise. The car was produced in February 2021 and I took delivery in March 2021. It has popping and banging when I put the car in sport+ and rev the car to only around 3000 RPM. It sounds like the car in the video by Joe Achilles titled SO MUCH WANT! BMW M5 Competition. This is the pre-LCI video. I should mention I am in the US. I would not consider it muted, but I am not a fan of the noise.

Greer, fantastic post and great review. I have one on order (since April) and was just told by the dealer here in Dallas to expect the build number in October and the car before December. Your post causes me to re-examine my config in 2 areas:
1) CCBs - the dealer talked me out of them - well of course I checked this forum and found reports of them making quite a bit of noise until they warmed up
2) the exhaust - I read reports that the performance exhaust was not the deep throat growl but kind of tinny albeit louder.
Lastly, I spec’d the Marina Bay Blue.
Interested in commentary from you guys on these areas.
