When to put in for Allocation?

Ok so 2020 lease is up in a year. I'd like to build my nest one to get it exactly the way I want. annoyed about the lack BW on the '23 but I guess Worst case Naruto I can try and find a '21 instead.

I really want CCB and a carbon roof this next go around as well as a comp.

BW isn't a must I guess but certainly is better than the HK and dresses up the interior nicely.

So I've never done this before and this was my first lease anyway but couldn't build the '20 as they stopped production when I needed a car.

How long do I need to look to get an allocation with my lease being a year out. I'm also open to just buying my lease out now and selling before my build comes in.

My best guess is 7-8 months and 9-10 months if you are doing something Individual.

Some 22's (like mine) have BW so maybe an option there as well.

Seeing your recent post, you may want to explore the possibility of retrofitting a BW on a new car. Not sure if anyone has done it, or if it's even possible but maybe an idea to consider.

I think the most current issue you'll face are port delays in Germany. Not sure if RAM issues are still prevalent.

I placed my order on a 2022 M5C on 12/20/21; got an allocation on 2/2/22; car was delivered to me 5/21/22. Specific colors could push everything out, (one I was considering was going to push the build date out to mid-July).

It was actually a pretty easy process.

I had an allocation last December. Build date originally late May. I have an individual color as well. I think my car is at the port in NJ and hoping to see it in a few weeks.

This is a bit of a question for me too as I want to get an individual build slot right at the end of production. So knowing when the last call is for individual slots is hard to find out.

My 22 was locked on 7/2 and delivered in November. I have CCB, BW, DA, Exec. I got a little lucky as within a week some of those options were gone. I would order 6 months out from lease end if I were you to be safe.

My order was accepted mid March, sat at port for 2 weeks, and is now on vessel ETA Baltimore 7/18. Chicago final delivery. I was probably lucky at Bremerhaven as EU ports are taking on major delays. 6 months minimum is probably spot on.

I am surprised that you are looking at replacing your M5 after all the work and time you have put into it.

Whomever gets your car is really lucky!

The dealer I talked to this morning is saying it would take about 5-6 months before I would get the car delivered.

If its a 111 status allocation and you go with a non-individual color I think you're looking at 3-4 months. Found a build week 9 at 111 status in first week of February, was slated to be delivered May-ish. (to West Coast). Changed the color to am individual one, bumped me from week 9 to week 20 and extended the whole ordeal to 6-7 months. So I think it depends. I also saw that you're on the east coast so it will be at least 2-3 weeks faster to east coast then it would be to west coast.

Hope this helps

thanks for the replies everyone. and ya i plan on moving everything i have done to this car to the next one. Kept all the stock parts for a reason, haha! Only thing i'll have to redo is tint/ppf/ceramic.

Will also be going CCBs and i'd like to do Nardo on this next build so i guess i can expect to see 6-7 months. I'm more curious if there will still be allocations come Dec/Jan24.

Also can any dealer acquire an allocation? I dont really like my local dealer but i guess i can go through the same lease broker i used on my current one.

You can work with any dealer you want, as long as they are close by for you to pick it up or willing to ship it. I spoke with east coast dealers because my local dealers (southern CA) were asking for 15k mark up for a car that they would submit to the order bank and keep me waiting for 8-10 months at best case. Most of the east coast dealerships I spoke to told me that they don't sell out of state/I would have to fly out to sign the papers and pick the car up in person. So I went the broker route as well, I think it is your best bet since they have the relationships with the dealership and don't have the incentive to take your money and sit on it so it tends to make the process faster and smoother. Again personal opinion, but if I was doing again, I would go the broker route again.

oh and current option i am weighing is to just go for an allocation now and then "buying out my current lease" when the new one arrives or seeing if the dealer will do a trade-in for the new lease.

Thoughts?

Really depends on your payoff versus the market. I did this with my 19'M5C as I could buy it for close to 40% less than market. This was one of the 1st M5C's delivered and residuals were garbage ... this hugely benefitted me as the car market went nuts and I had a car I could buy well below market.

DM me if you want more details.

Yeah you can go to any dealer in the country, also you have 2 options for shipping: the dealer you buy from can talk to a dealer closer to you and arrange for your car to be delivered there instead of the one you bought from (doesn't really affect them in any way) or 2: bmw will ship the car for you from where you purchased to where you want to pick it up for a flat fee (750 or 950 I forget the exact amount but it's very reasonable) sadly it is exposed transport so just something to keep in mind.

Some dealers may insist that you sign paperwork in person, but not all, just find one that's willing to fedex the paperwork to you. (They're more cautious after 2008 and all the scams that happened around those years) and worst case you fly out pick up the car and enjoy a mini vacation😁😁

Edit: saw you're profile says va, you can do performance delivery so that means free shipping to SC at least🤣.

Awesome will do man thanks! My residual is gonna be in the mid $60k and current buyout is $82. Both are well bellow current market so i think either way i should be covered. I'd rather find a dealer who will take it as a trade in so save me taxes but that may be harder than i'd like.

ya i've thought about that. But i also wouldn't want to risk hwy driving before getting ppf, lol. although i did pick up my current M in Baltimore and drove it down with no issues. A performance delivery could be sweet! may even try and take advantage of an M driving day while down there if i can get the dates to line up.

With the whole trade in thing, find a dealership thats an autonation dealership to buy from, then you can drop your car off basically at any other autonation dealership (was able to do this with purchasing so I think it should work with selling too, and basically one dealer just bought the car from other other internally)...

But you most likely won't be able to line up the dates with the school and performance delivery simply because the performance delivery blocks out like a whole week at a time (mon-fri) so unless you find a track day on the weekend before or after and they schedule your delivery either Monday or Friday it's gonna be tough.

Take PC delivery, then use an enclosed carrier to ship from SC to VA. I suggest Montway as BMW will not assist in tenasportation from the PC. Just used them to transport my new M5C purchase about 1000 miles away from me at the end of May (and many times before) for the same reason, and they never disappoint. You could probably get them to do that distance for right around $1000. Well worth the money to be able to do PCD and keep your new car safe until you get it in for PPF.

Bmw will ship the car for 750 even from performance center just not enclosed which is unfortunate (I remember when they used to only ship enclosed lol... guess not worth the money anymore). How did it go with montway? And were you the only car? I was gonna use them but they couldn't guarantee a pickup (crucial when doing PC delivery and you only have that one day to load the car lol) or delivery date nor that my car wouldn't get moved around on the trailer so ended up going with a different company and super satisfied, 1 car trailer from PC to North NJ was like 1100. Dude showed up literally at the minute I told him to loaded up the car and it was gone.

One thing to keep in mind is the PC driving portion really isn't that special other than the off road part if you care about it, and the factory tour, if you're looking more for the track time I'd say you're better off either paying for private instruction or for an m school instead of paying for shipping the car. (You only get a short autocross track with your car but you get a decent amount of laps in, especially if you don't have a second person)

Not saying I didn't love doing the PC delivery just don't expect a whole lot of driving time. So depending on the person the price of shipping thr car could be better spent. Would I do the PC delivery again? Heck yeah, but I also signed up for 6 hours of private lessons, 2 m schools and some other track events.

Thanks for the clarification; I did mean BMW won't assist in enclosed transportation.

Montway was absolutely amazing. I have used them numerous times for dozens of cars I've purchased and leased, as well as for transportation to different parts of the country when I have been relocated. I recommend them highly. I have only ever been the only car in the enclosed trailer, and it's always been covered as well. I attached a photo below. I have always had them to commit to a specific pick up day when booked far enough in advance, and when paying for that service additionally, though it's nominal. On my most recent M5C, they provided me with a guaranteed pick up time, which was only 36 hours after I first reached out. My experience with them was just like what you described about the company you went with.

Sorry OP, didn't mean to threadjack, but I thought this info might be useful to you and others as well.

For what it’s worth, My order was accepted by BMW AG mid March and car arrived Chicago today. I’ll take delivery on Saturday. Alpine white with B&W. Other forum members mentioned you should still be able to special request B&W.
