Hi Dan,
Looking for a 2022 LCI build with individual color. Do you have an allocation for one?

How much of a difference is there between discounts for a lease vs. purchase? This is assuming you're able to negotiate a purchase price.

There should be zero. The dealership is selling the car either way, it's either to you or to BMW Financial Services. A sneaky dealership may quote you a better price for a lease and then pad the money factor (which BMW FS lets them do) to make the same amount of money as the price they quote you to sell it to you.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm in negotiations now and I want to be as informed as possible (even though I'll likely purchase rather than lease anyway).

Not sure if this is the right place for this but:

I'm considering switching out of my '21 m5c and into an x7 for family logistics reasons (I now have 4 kids in school since my 3yo twins have joined their 4&6 yo siblings). My wife and I do have an Escalade esv for kid hauling and for vacation/travel requiring full family plus luggage, but the issue is our work schedules don't allow for one of us to take the kids to school and the other to pick them up with the one vehicle big enough to do that with… I think I need a second kid hauler 😭

Besides the obvious "don't ditch the M5!", does anybody have input on what works in this situation?

- '21 m5c leased with a single-pay lease effective 11/2020, meaning I paid the entire cost of the lease up front at delivery and currently have no monthly payment

- a well-spec'd x7 costs probably pretty close to what the m5 is worth

I'm trying to figure out if there is a cash neutral way to get out of my current lease and into a new lease on a vehicle of roughly the same value? I'm not too clear on the path forward so I'd really appreciate any input/experience from here before going into a dealership cross-eyed. TIA!

I think you have two options:

1. Trade in the M5C just like a regularly owned car, and the equity of your pre-payment should transfer to the X7
2. Do a lease transfer, where the new person pays you for the remainder of the lease upfront, or you trust him enough (family member or friend?) to make monthly payments.

Thanks AmooManiak , option 1 seems closest to what I'm trying to do. My understanding is I'll need to fully close out my m5 lease and then enter a new agreement on an x7.. I'm just confused by the seemingly uncommon situation of having paid the lease up front and how that looks if I'm to terminate the lease early. Even though it's not necessary, I'm thinking it will be easiest to negotiate a deal with the dealership I leased my M5 from and have a good relationship with. My end goal if at all possible is to leave the M5, get an x7 and still have no monthly payment. I'll see how things go. I'm not one to take a bad deal, so worst case scenario I'll keep the M5 and just figure out my kid transport needs with the vehicles I already have.

Since you paid for the whole lease upfront, I would think that your payoff is much lower than most M5s. If you want to trade it in for an X7, you should be in a decent (positive) position.

First thing I would do is look at your payoff on your BMWFS account. Then you can compare that against what most dealerships sell a similar car for in your area. Then deduct about $5k of profit and that should give you an approximate trade-in value. Then just subtract the payoff amount from the trade-in value and that should give you the positive equity that you should be able to pull forward for the X7.

Of course, you need to check this with the dealership as there may be other stipulations.

I would just go to my dealer and have my SA work out the details. That is what I did when I wanted to get out 1 year before my pre-LCI lease return.

We have the same dealer. They do, to be PC about it, like to maximize the profit potential. I have to beat the crap out of them to match a better price. Agree though, that they go the extra mile for service.

You are correct, but to be fair, there are incentives that vary across the country, so they may honestly not know what those are outside of their region.

Dan, what are you seeing now for tri-state area on '22 X3 M40i LCI for a build allocation? I was quoted at MRSP before $1500 incentives (finance + loyalty) in NJ. When I asked for 5% off MSRP, I was told I would be getting a huge 'discount' already by not paying $5k over the MSRP, which is what they are quoting other customers. This was for a build to go in next week, to be delivered 5-6 weeks from now.

anything M40 is going for 0 off at most dealers. I see some doing 3-5% in the tri-state but that's less than a handful of dealers

Thank you so much for the timely and honest response. I guess the only decision is whether to keep this deal (the cost of which I’m not happy with - but at least I can actually get the car I want), or try to ride things out until the market returns to normal. What are your thoughts on a normal market with discount numbers like 2019? 1st half of 22, 2nd half of 22, or 23 (or later)?

This is just speculation on my part so take it with a grain of salt but I don’t see any semblance of back to normal till MY ‘23.

Do you still see it - 6%-for x3m? It is a nieche car. Not everybody likes it for rough ride, lack,of low end torque and no hitch. They used to sit at the lots with 12-15% discount and i know people who leased them for 800 dollars in 2020

There's no negotiating on purchase price in the current car market climate as far as I'm aware of.

in some small cases yes. I just got 2k off for brothers m3 order. But my mother did just buy an x5 last week as well, so that helped.

2k was the best I could do too, but it’s something.
