Pirelli or Michelin
OK some honest answers needed here. My new M5 Comp Ultimate arrives week 18th October time, I don't know what tyres will be on it.
I have always had Michelin tyres arrive on all my 3 F90 M5's in the past so have no idea what the Pirelli's will be like. Anyone who has them or driven them can you tell me if they generate more road noise and what's the grip like, thanks in advance . I was going to remove the pirelli's if the car came on them, do I really need to.

I have them, they work really good. Silent, good grip when warm. They toss rocks when warm.
I have Michelin cup 2s in the garage for when my new wheels come in, so not much comparison. But they handle good and I push the car in 2wd and 4wd daily. |

The Pirelli's are terrible.
They are noisy, wear out fast and grip isn't good either. Michelin is the only way to go with high performance cars. |

This is just personal opinion but across a number of cars, I’ve had Pirelli, Continental and Michelin and I can honestly say that Pirelli PZero is the worst tyre I’ve ever had in my life. My own experience is so bad I don’t understand how they’re being used by so many manufacturers.
Back in the day I had a set of Falkens on an Audi snd I thought those were better. Conversely the Pilotsport 4S is the best tyre I’ve had on any car ever. |

I don't think BMW would go through the trouble and expense of developing a star-marked tire with Pirelli specifically for this car if the tire was pure trash. Mine are fine at 15k miles and I drive the car pretty hard somewhat often (lots of rural backroads where I live). I've never once found myself feeling that the tires are deficient, let alone unacceptably awful. I think a lot of the hate for the Pirelli option is based more on group think than on any kind of objective measure… I wouldn't panic if your car comes with Pirelli instead of Michelin.

I cut 2.61 0-60mph with the pzero and 10.34 at 133mph on the street in cooler weather and roads. When they warm up, they grip good, I have a stage 2 M5 with downpipes, e40, jb4 and go flyin around pretty hard on them, never felt bad to me.
This is spirited driving on the street, not sure if these guys track with their cars or just commute to work... If they are cold, they will spin and I have done many 4wd spins all through first gear if there is no heat in the tire. Rwd and cold tires will spin 3rd gear over 100kmh. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I find this car dead silent on the road, its actually too quiet. Change them out to Michelin after they wear down or take off and sell new... |

I swore by my Pirelli P600s that I had on my GTI back in the 80s. I purchased a new car in 2007 that had Scorpions from the factory and I hated them. Noisy, harsh and they wore way too fast. Been running Michelin’s on that car since then.
Anecdotal sure, but it seems to be in line with other opinions I’ve gathered over the years. |

Mine came with Pirellis. I was happy with them but they were shot with 9,600 miles on them. I wanted something that might last longer and read the strong reviews on the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S so I got them. 12,000 miles later and the Michelins are almost done, so it's decision time. The Michelins are a little quieter and have a little softer, luxury ride. The downside is that the Michelins sidewall has a lot more flex in it and they aren't as confidence inspiring in hard cornering. I've gotten used to it but it's a negative. I may reorder the Michelins based on me prioritizing the softer ride and longer tread life. If you frequently corner aggressively you might favor the Pirellis. Either way, I definitely wouldn't take the Pirellis off and throw them out until they're shot.

all this bitching about pzeros like bmw is going to put a shit tire on the car. the pzero does perfectly fine for an AWD sedan. I did 11.1 in a non comp car in the 1/4 with pzero's. Half of the people complaning about the tire haven't probably seen a drag strip. It does perfectly fine. If you're going to discuss wear and tear, thats different. But the grip is fine.

Many thanks for all your comments, I will give them a go for a few weeks to see , then make the decision.

I bought my 18 M5 in August of 2018, I currently have just under 9,800 miles. I have the original Pirellis on the vehicle. I still have plenty of tire tread left, they are quiet, and handle great. As you can tell from the mileage the M5 is not my everyday driver. I have a work vehicle assigned to me that I take home from work. I do not track the M5 but I do some spirited driving. For those of you are from San Diego County and are familiar with Palomar Mountain, there are a series of sharp 180 degree sweeping turns going from the base to the top. The M5 with Pirellis handle it with no drama.
I have only owned one vehicle that chewed through the rear tires and that was my 1992 Acura NSX, at 7,000 miles the tires were almost bald. |
