BMW, or ///M, like to hark on about how these cars are great for the track...yet they put a gearbox like that in it

Yep. Seems very plausible!
Look at the track conditions of C. Gebhardts lap in the F90 comp. Not optimal with some damp sections!
Joerg with some preparation could/would do 7:25 with ideal conditions.
Then with PSC2 he could even achieve low 7:20 thereby breaking AMG GT63s record for 4door saloons... since planning for such a record and blocking the ring for several time trials is a huge effort, I think ///M is holding back for the M8 GC to crash AMG GT63S time...

I knew I wanted a fast four door car for the past 3 years. You read tons of magazines, go to car gatherings, visit dealers (they will nod and tell you everything you want to here). But how do choose your new car (except moneywise): by facts? By heart? Both?? I went several times to the Ring - over 3 years. Saw the cars there. Spoke to guys from many countries. But what really REALLY convinced me was... the Ring Taxi: what car is it this year - M3 E90 (still a stunning 4 door). Next year the M5 F10. And the next year the M3 CP in stunning Alpine White. I asked why back to the M3? "This M3 drives in circles around the ol' M5!" I jumped in for a Pro round. Exhausted, He let me off the at the parking lot w a big smile on my face. I knew the M3 was the car to have - its not a small car either, I estimate its almost the size as an E60. I admit the F90C is very nice. But not as nimple. More expensive to maintain. A little faster w the right driver, but it must put up with 625 hp (maybe more, the initial test car at SA had 670) to do about the same as a 450 hp M3 CP on the track. So I'm in love - with the rear arches of my 2018 Maldives Blue M3. So much I wrapped the car with Llumar stone chip protection film - in 2 layers

I don't blame the M division. BMW made its biggest purchase of transmissions from ZF last year of these ZF8s and BMW basically said, you have to use these because we need to save money for electric R&D.

Off Topic, S-Class buyers are indeed in the 62 age bracket with a $324k annual income but AMG buyers are in the low to mid 40's with a $500k to $600k annual income. Other MB buyers are at 51/52

BMW buyers are older than AMG buyers (mid-upper 40's). Wonder if BMW has demographic for M-cars...

Congrats. I went in the ring taxi in 2014 when it was an F10 M5 and asked the driver how the F80 M3 compared. He chose his words carefully, but it was the smaller more nimble car.

After driving 3 different 5 series over the last 8 years, I have recently downsized and wish I had done it sooner.

To quote Colin Chapman - "Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere"

M drivers are in the 19 year old age bracket - or that is the age our maturity hit plateau.

Here's the entire Sport Auto article, unfortunately the e-magazine no longer comes with a plain text version where I can copy and paste it to google translate, so for those who can read German, enjoy!

By the way can someone translate why on the HP and weight distribution page it's a different color M5? Did SA explain why?

Time restraints. One car for the Nordschleife time, one for Hockenheim time which was also used for the lab tests.

Not really ... the text says, that some assistant driver, who was responsible for commuting the british racing green exemplar from Nordschleife to the dyno test facility totalled the car ... so it had to be replacec by the silver one. But sport auto did a test run later with the silver one at Nürburgring Nordschleife and it did almost the same lap time like the british racing green one from which the best time was recorded ...

That copy -> paste clearly didn't work. They managed nearly identical conditions for the Nordschleife as were present for the Std F90 Lap. Was too late in the season to redo with a single car for the entire super test with the same temps.
