Wiping it off with his wipers would cause a lack of visibility. It would just streak all over the windscreen making a big mess and cause him to probably stop the race.

Because of the rules of statistical analysis. That Giulia lap time is an outlier compared to all other comparative Giulia lap times on other tracks and should therefore be discarded as a data point.

I am curious, how much track driving experience do you have? If you would, you would also understand that you cannot compare the lap times of a car of unknown tuning condition driven by a factory driver over multiple laps to a single flying lap (preceded by a single warm-up lap) made by driver unfamiliar with the car that was taken straight off the showroom floor.

I picked up numerous occasions on that video where the ZF sounded really sluggish and slushy. A real shame the aren't crisp gear changes like on a DCT.

I just watched the video and had a good laugh when the driver's phone kept on ringing. There's a point at 2:44 where you see him get annoyed with it .

Public service reminder: always put your phone in "Airplane mode" when you hit the track

Often supertest times are many secs slower than manuf times. So, unless all the times you guys are quoting are also supertest times (since the m5 is a supertest time), they basically mean nothing.
While you are right about the Super tests, Sport Auto Nurburgring runs from Christian Gebhardt are about the best realistic times one can expect from these cars.
They also hold more credibility than factory driven car records...

It's an ego thing. Most people don't even track their cars but knowing a professional driver can lap the car they own faster than the competition that other people are driving makes them feel better about themself. Even though they may have 0 driving skills, the emotional thrill or significance is still attached to them as if it was them.

I always had the same feeling about the current high tech laden crop of M cars. With all the ECUs and expensive oily bits they still seem to fall short of brilliance with such benchmarks.

When M car came to be in the past it was an absolute best in its class and comparable to cars built with a single purpose. Today’s cars are great but they are no longer the stand outs they were in the past.

That is not a testament of BMWs lack of brilliance, that is a testament that the competition has gotten brilliant also. With that said I still prefer to drive a bmw over a Mercedes or Audi because of the way I feel in a Bimmer.
