Michelin Pilot Sport 4S - STAR MARK?

Does anyone have any experience based impressions of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or PZ4 vs the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S * (star marked BMW OE)? I just paid a premium for the * variant at the dealer over the standard tires based on what I learned from this video:

It’s for the G8X but I’m hoping the same improvement holds for F90.
Replaced the original Pirelli P Zeros (PZ4) after a paltry 14k miles. Seemed okay from a performance perspective but not for treadwear.

LMAO, I just looked, I have the Star. I bought mine from Tire Rack. So I don't think I paid any extra premium. I just picked the OEM and that is what I got, but there are always several listings for the same tire at the same price, I never looked close enough to see any difference.

Anyway, the snows are OFF and the Stars are on.

Unless you are an exceptional or professional race driver, I don't think you will notice the difference but the star marked ones keeps the OEM look

I prefer the star mark as the compound is better and even if it cost a bit more who cares, imo, its worth it.

I do believe a new pilot sport 5 s is coming out soon that also has a greater compound then the 4s

Thanks for posting the video. I knew they were different but I didn’t know they were THAT different.

I recently replaced all four tires at the dealership (my first tire change since I bought the car in 2019) and they replaced it with the BMW-spec Michelins. Finally got rid of the Pirellis.

Also, I got 10,700 miles out of my Pirellis. I’m surprised you got as many as you did.

Keep in mind that video is for the M3. We really don't know what the star gets you for the M5 aside from different tread depth. I would argue the Pilot is a superior tire to the Pzeros in either form. I just mounted my new PS4S's. I'm excited to get them broken in. And I'm looking forward to the first heavy rain to see how they do. The Pzeros did not inspire confidence in rain.

I paid a $140 (per tire!) premium over tirerack so not feeling great about that.... yet. Still breaking them in so my only comment on them is - they seem really grippy so no complaints. I'll do a more in depth review after 300+ miles.

Jakerx, I got about 10k miles too. Was living on borrowed time.

If there's any difference between star tires then maybe it was worth the premium, otherwise generally speaking tirerack has the star and non star tires for only a few $ difference. That being said mercedes has different ratings MO MO1 MOE etc so maybe not all star tires are the same in the same sizes? But who really knows

I hate taking my car to the dealership for anything (I even don't like dropping my wheels off for them to mount tires). I can't image letting Costco rotate tires (make sure they realized they can only go left/right). I would say don't go there if you have CCBs since the chance of them dinging a disc is pretty good.

In another thread I talked about how I have the Star BMW fronts and not rears but the dealer and Michelin say that's fine. The visible differences are slightly different coloring of the sidewall markings, more tread depth on the non-star, and the fronts are made in France, the rears in USA. This should make my car handle predictably as the fronts will surrender first

Interesting question. My dad uses Costco for tires and he is very picky about who does service on his M5. He actually found that the guy running the Costco Tire department was more of a Car Guy/Gear Head than the techs at the BMW dealership. If they damage a wheel THEY RePLACE it. Period.

I took my wheels (Boxster) to the Porsche dealer for new tire mount and balance in the back of the Minivan. LOL.

I used to bring wheels for my Audis to the local BMW dealer for mount and balance but I would not let them uncap the valve stems to add air to a tire.

I have to bring the Boxster car in for a NYS inspection but that is all I let them do. My local indy does inspections on my M5 and other cars, I'm more picky about the Boxster.

Can't mount the tire without uncapping the valve stem and adding air.

Or are you being demonstrative...?

I used to take wheels there, now I would not even TRUST them or LET them EVEN as much as uncap a valve stem to add air if I drove up with a low tire .

Missed the whole meaning. Bummer man. It frankly often boils down to ONE TECH. My BMW tech has been there for eons, and worth every penny I put into the dealership where he works.

I was said yesterday by my dealer when servicing the car that using non star tyres could void the warranty of the transfercase.

I have been using Costco for tire needs for all my cars for a long time and never had any issues whatsoever. Have also been using them for M5 bi-annual tire (now wheel, since I built a second set) swaps, bought PS4S-AS from them, and will soon be buying summer PS4S from them. They have both star marked and non star marked versions for the same price, winter tire / wheel swap is only 50 bucks, and they provide pretty good road hazard warranty and free wheel rotations. Last year my wife hit an object on the road in our Audi A6 which essentially ruined 2 barely used tires. That gave us 85% off on replacement tires based on tread wear. Tire center techs at my local Costco are senior folks that I have seen there for years and are super knowledgable.

It was not against you it was towards the dealership so sorry if you where offended.

Interesting if thats the case can you take a pic off the terms and upload so we can see?
Because that sounds ridiculous i understand if you run to much of a wrong circumference front to back but not i if it’s star marked tire or not.
I have actually heard this been said before from a tire dealer but don’t believe it one bit.

I remember reading a few posts on the m550 that non-star marked tires were susceptible to vibration issues at highway speeds.

Example: https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=28155873

And

https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=28474359

There are a few others if you search.
