Fuel cut ?

Chaps,
Giving my car the full beans the other day in 2nd gear, and got very close to redline, and i got what i can only describe as a fuel cut, felt like i lost the engine for a split second, as in brrr ! before grabbing 3rd gear. Did run into the redline on WOT. Couldnt reproduce it, but just wanted to ask if it could have been a fuel cut ?, TIA

Thats what the limiter is for. You can hit the limiter and know you have hit the limiter, but this was a definite power, and engine loss, very momentarily. The last time i felt this was in an EVO 6, which were known for fuel cuts. Just trying to understand what happened.

For my education, why would you go WOT in second gear to redline?

It just caught me out on this occasion, as it gets through the revs that quick.

I’ve accidentally redlined it in 1st twice now by bumping it into manual, hopefully I didn’t damage anything. It gets up there quickly

Yes I have on occasion inadvertently shifted into manual mode. It tends to happen when I am putting the car in drive and accidentally move the shifter twice to the right. Fortunately I usually take off slow and notice it before revs go too high.

Hitting the rev limiter, while accelerating, won't do any damage. The limiter is specifically there to prevent any damage from happening.

However, in a manual gearbox car, there is no rev limiter when downshifting. So, that is when serious damage can occur. Luckily, the M5 is an automatic so the computers won't allow a downshift if it can't complete it safely.
