I have had the same problem. I had an old wire that I rigged up for my 370z, and it worked for a few days with the f30 but then stopped. I assumed it was just old and not ready for such a serious automobile. I couldn't remember where I got it. I ordered another off ebay, it had tiny pins that I knew wouldn't work from the get go, so I returned it and ordered the invisicord and I have been having the same issues. I can find the sweet spot holding it in certain positions, then when I get it to stay on and attempt to put the housing back up it cuts out again. I can only now assume the pins are still not long enough. A few messages up someone mentioned a special longer pin version so I guess I will try that now. Very frustrating.

the second I sent that I looked at mirrortap.com, that was what I used on the Z, so I will try this again. The pins seemed to be longer.

Just so this is up to date for the future...Mirrortap is the only one you should buy. I has long enough prongs to work. I also go the blend mount so my v1 attaches to the mirror and looks pretty sick.

Ah, wish I would have read this earlier. I ordered a BlendMount, but not the MirrorTap. Went with one from Amazon that has good reviews. But the pins aren't long enough, so now I have to pay for shipping again from BlendMount. Darn.

Edit: but the MirrorTap cord looks EXACTLY the same as the one I bought from Amazon. Hmmm....

I also ordered the Amazon one and not only were the pins too short, but the wire was too short for my placement on the driver side visor. So I ended up ordering from Blendmount/Mirror Tap(same company maybe) I selected my vehicle and mirror type on the site and it pointed me to the correct product. For me it was the MT-4020(20") length. It was an easy install but I did have to push the pins in further like others have said. At first I had no power but then I reread the previous posts and sure enough, another 1/8" push and I had power. I then fed the wire up to the headliner inside the plastic housing and rubber collar and then ran it toward driver side tucked under headliner and then came straight down to the V1 mounted on the right side of the visor. Looks amazing and so clean. Will post a few pics soon. I did the same thing in my 09 TL that I sold for this car as well as on my 10 CX-9. Thanks to all for the info.

Super easy DIY. Thanks for the instructions. I think it took all of ten minutes to get this done.

So this may be a dumb question, but if I have the base rear view mirror (no Home Link, compass, auto-dimming), will I still have these power connections inside the mirror housing?

TIA

Without the self-dimming mirror, the harness that we're tapping won't be there. You'll have to look at another way to get power up there for a radar detector. You may want to check out this thread.

Thanks to the OP and all contributors of this thread! I've hard-wired radar detectors in all of my vehicles for many years now and this was by far the easiest and cleanest method.

I'm familiar with working with telephone and networking cable and used some extra 4-wire telephone cable that I had sitting around to make my own hardwire. I stripped the ends a little over an inch long and then folded half of it back, essentially doubling-up it up. The doubled-up, thicker wire went in with a little finess and held better. I then jammed the end of a toothpick in there and broke it off. It probably sounds like a hack but it helped secure the wires in place and the wood is non-conductive. I then secured my wire to the harness running to the mirror with a zip tie. That'll hold everything together and prevent against my wire ripping out in case the radar detector fell off the windshield. Tucked it up under the headliner and then dropped the end out next to where the radar detector is mounted.

There was quite a bit of discussion on mounts. For years now I've used the stock mount, removing the suction cups, and using some Permatex Clear RTV Silicone Adhesive Sealant to adhere it to the windshield. Just apply a light coat to the metal, press it to the windshield where you want it, and give it 24 hours to set. It holds in all temperatures and can be removed (e.g. if you sell the vehicle) by sliding a razor in there.

I chose to mount by the passenger side visor. The high mount conceals it nicely, doesn't obstruct the driver's view in any way, and leaves the driver's side visor operational.

Looks like for 2016+ 340i the taps on the mirror do not work and are not of enough voltage for V1 radar.
Had to use the nearby taps for the rainsensor instead as per the F80 forums:

When pulling off the center cover behind the mirror, are you splitting it at the seam and taking each side off left and right or pulling it towards you?

I used a credit card to split the mirror at the seam. In one of my pictures above which is a side view and shows one part of the cover in place, you can see the three small clips. (i.e. one by the mirror stem, another where the colored wires show, and the last up by the top) As the cover splits, you'll be able to pull the two parts away from each other, left and right. Be careful when you do it but don't overthink it. It comes apart fairly easily. Hope that helps!

I took the invisicord pins out and inserted them under the wire. Look at Mcalc's pic above. I put the invisicord pins on the opposite side of where he has it and haven't had a problem since. RD fires up as soon as the car does.
This post saved the day - couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting power - thank you!

Its not too bad.. used to it by now it just turns off with the rain sensor which is like 3-5 minutes after shutoff of car.

Did we determine if this works on a 2016 f30?

Amazing!! How did you do that? Were you able to do it on your F30?
