6 speed for Dummys?
Has anyone else noticed some of the pretty convenient features the 6 speed manuals have?
Incline assist? On an incline after you take your foot of the clutch the brakes remain engaged for about 2 second to allow you to apply gas. Thats pretty cool as that is probably the number one thing people complain about in a manuals car is driving on hills. I also noticed that you can completely take your foot off the clutch without pressing on the gas and the car will move slowly like an auto with your foot off the brake. That would make driving in traffic pretty easy These are some convenient features but pretty much takes\ care of any problems people always complain about when driving stick. Hills and getting out of 1st. |

Eh, u can do this in any manual car. I certainly do it in my CTS, specially in traffic.

Well my ZHP would move a little as I released the clutch and start to stall |

If you release it slowly and are in a level surface is just keeps going without gas and w/o stalling. But if youre in a corner or in a slight incline you need some gas

The Hill Start Assist works in reverse too when backing uphill. The car knows that you're about to backup an incline and holds the brakes on so you don't roll forward.....it works brilliantly.

I disagree. I love the 6 speed Auto and if I lived in the country rather than the city I might agree with you then. I used to always have a stick until my 97 M3. Took it out and fell in love with it and finally sold it to buy my 330I step/sprt/lxry. IMHO |

I love the brake assist, but i swear I cannot figure out when/ how it gets activated. Sometimes they engage, sometimes they dont. I figure you have to have the clutch in for it to work. But just today I was on an incline, I press the clutch, remove the brakes...no brake assist. I try again. Nope. Release and press clutch didnt fix it (ofcourse by now there is an inch between me and the car behind me so I stopped "testing").
Guys try this, i think this is the only scenario when the brakes wont engage. 1)While arriving at a stop (on an incline) press the clutch all the way in. Do not press the brakes, let the car roll to a stop by its own momentum (the lack of it) till it starts rolling back. 2)Then press the brakes (to stop you from rolling to way backward). 3) Clutch is still in...release the brakes...No brake assist !! Probably hard to do this on a traffic light because you have to do the math right, but I am pretty sure this is the scenario when my assists dont work. Thanks Skimo |

but before I bought my 3 the salesmen kept trying to get me to test drive an auto even though I knew i would never get one. Well I figured might as well try the auto and I must say it is 100X better than the previous step. This 6 speed step feels more like an SMG. Its lightning fast and rev matches well on downshifts it was good but obviously not enough to convince me to get an auto. Ill save that for a 7 or a benz. |

I am not sure I quite understand your question. Maybe my terminology is not correct...when I say "clutch pressed in" i mean that your foot is pressing the clutch pedal down. Quote:
I hope I'm more clear now. Sorry for the confusion ! Skimo |

I was just wondering how you'd manage to perfectly time the acceleration on an incline so that you wouldn't have to ultimately depress the clutch, and then the brake. You're a better "incline" driver than I am. As long as it works, that's all that matters. |
