"Low Coolant Warning"
Have any one else on forum with a 2018 M5 non-Comp had the Low coolant warning light come on? I had mine come on Friday, stayed on for about 6 hour. restarted car on Saturday, no fault light was on. I was going to drive it today, when I started it up light came back on! Is my coolant low or is this a false warning. I have never replace the coolant level in my X5M and I have 40K miles and my M5 only has 5K on it? Any input would help?

Just happened to me for the first time this weekend but goes off after my car warms up ... haven't done anything yet again I have a service appointment next month (warranty recall for stuff) and one thing is for the coolant I think.

It has happened twice for me. Both right around when the weather gets colder. I think each time it was the same amount, about 25 oz. But there was another thread that asked the same thing. It seems others have had it while some had it fixed. I was thinking of bringing it up the next time my car goes in for service.

It is apparently a normal thing for M cars according to my service advisor. I've had it happen twice within a year (put 12,000 miles in between each occurence) and the dealer has topped it off for free. I bought a quart of coolant though just to be on the safe side since I do some rallys, but as already mentioned the warning does go away after the next start

My car was in for oil service last week and the SA mentioned there was a check for coolant level to ensure it was not burning coolant? Maybe this is related to the issues here?

How do you check if coolant is needed and how much? I took the cap off (in the dark) but couldn't see a dipstick/line to fill up to?

To top up, would any coolant work or do I need to use a specific BMW F90 coolant only sold at BMW parts?

Didn't get the warning but checked my coolant levels due to posts about this a few months ago. The main system needed topping up by 3/4 of a litre, secondary system was fine. Asked dealer and they sent me the below. I was advised that if I have topped up then that's all that is needed unless levels dropped again. Been fine for several months now.
They will recheck at next visit. This is the number of the enhancement 0017930100 : Correcting the coolant level F90 G1x G30 N63B S63M Situation The coolant level may be very low due to the design of the coolant expansion tank and filling process in the plant. Effect If the mileage is very low, the coolant level being too low can cause a Check Control message. Vehicles concerned According to the vehicle selection. Production Period: May 2017 to March 2019. Measures Check the coolant level and top it up to the maximum, if necessary. |

Have to get BMW specific coolant from BMW. It is not specific to the F90, all BMWs use the same

Okay, was able to check both coolant levels, both seemed slightly below the "min" level indicators. Might just wait for my service in 4 weeks.

Do you know what they need to fix? Is there a leak or are they just adding / topping up the coolant?

I got this last week after leaving car outside at work for 36 hours. I was just as the car said, low on coolant. I have 20k miles on the car so having it down a bit is not surprising. The cold temps last weekend cause maximum contraction of the volume of coolant in the car so when I started the car it gave me the warning. It went away after shutting down and restarting. Just enough warming up of the fluid brought the level up high enough to make the sensor happy. My larger tank was down about maybe a half a quart, and the smaller tank was down maybe a cup or so. Just topped the two off and no issues.

Just had this come on for me yesterday -- 2018 F90 base. Went away when I restarted the vehicle, and checked that the coolant was indeed low.
Bought some coolant from the local dealership and will top it off later tonight. Car drives fine otherwise. |

Happened a couple weeks ago. 2019 M5C w/8000 miles. Added coolant & restarted the car, light went out. It came back on the next day while driving. I stopped & restarted the car, lights out again & hasn't come back on.
Never had to add coolant in the 3 years I had my F82. |

Distilled water OK?
Got a low coolant warning around 5000 miles. Called the parts counter at the dealership to see if could buy more. They weren't sure which one I would need though. The person I talked to thought probably the "blue" coolant. The stuff in the auxiliary reservoir looks yellow-green. Hard to see what's in the main reservoir since it's low but I think it's also yellow-green. I didn't want to risk mixing and matching or driving around with no coolant so I topped off with distilled water. It took at least 750cc to top off. I'm in an area where won't get freezing whether.
...This should be ok right... or should I head straight to the service dept and get it sorted out? |
