I live in a big city but was also confused by this story. Was not at all clear "valets left keys in car"

And one day later OP already ordered a new M5...

when someone say "that their car is usually blocked in by another car"
that means the parking lot attendants or valet park the cars where they live or where they parked because you cant be blocked in by other cars when you self park. In big cities and in some parking lots where attendants park the cars, they park them in tandem sometimes two or three cars deep. Its very common in Nyc.
When you want your car the attendant has to move one or two cars to get it out.
Op believes it was an inside job because there were no cars blocking his car in, the keys were left in the car, and the attendant didn't call the cops for three hours.

Hope this helps.

Got it, thanks. I have only lived in single homes with garages. Here, only my daughter sometimes blocks me......

Yep, I did read the original post. He made no mention of valet, just "the idiot" and "they" so that concept was not clearly communicated.

Edit: Just saw Njbmw17's explanation above of this completely foreign concept to me. Makes more sense now.

I ordered a new one regardless if they find it or not If you are insinuating that i made this happen well shame on you! If they find it i will have it fixed and sell it anyway or give it to my son. Regarding the Velets the story is very sketchy. So before you judge make sure you have all the facts. And if you want more of an explanation PM me i will be happy to give you more information.

I was simply agreeing it wasn't clear to me either that it was valet parked. I live in a big city and I didn't immediately catch that it was valet parked. Caught it was blocked in when you left but didn't connect that to valet parking

As far as insinuating anything I am not. Simply agreeing on someone commenting why leave keys left in car and original post not saying it was valet parked.

I don't in anyway believe you have anything to do with, just agreeing with some posters that the thread was not clear

In any case looks like you will be back in a M5 shortly. Sorry for your troubles, really sucks and I hope they don't find your car. I wouldn't want my car back after it being stolen and God knows what done to it. Best wishes

No worries its all good i did ask this one question

-When the car was started didn't he hear it! This car is loud and especially inside. I do have a few more but its not worth it. No one was hurt its only a car. The only thing i cared about is i had these beautiful sunglasses with a tint that is no longer available.

-My car was not the only high end car parked there. My car was parked in the back but in the front there where other very high end cars so it's not seen when you enter the lot. It just so happened these guys got lucky and went to my car first and hit the lottery with keys inside?

The cops said that it doesn't matter if they catch them because they will be let go the next day because of the new city law. The city has given the bad guys a licence to do what they want.

OP, you need to find a different and better place to park your car. I'm sure this goes without saying even though I said it.

I've said it for many years, and more so now than ever... You couldn't pay me enough to live in NYC (or most any other large city).

What did your insurance company say?

One really has no choice in Manhattan unless you own a multi-million-dollar brownstone with its own garage. It's either the street or a paid parking garage.

Is the garage responsible in any way, or is it on your insurance? Seems like there should be some repercussions placed on the garage. If they can just shrug their shoulders and say "sorry", then what incentive do they have to keep this kind of thing from becoming common.

Probably not a huge priority these days. Car is most likely insured or should be. Just because valet left keys in the car doesn’t mean immediate arrest. Arresting valet will do nothing for the OP. Damage already done.

Why would the keys be left in the car, surely this voids the insurance?

Numerous cars are stolen everyday where the keys are left in cars. Gas stations, your home when you start your car to get it heated up. No law or insurance company says you can’t leave your keys in the car.

If that were the case next they won’t insure you if you leave your car unlocked or your parked in a bad neighborhood or you drive a car that is typically a high risk for theft.

Of course you do need to have more than just liability coverage on the car. I’m assuming a car like this the OP carries collision and comprehensive coverage. The comp will cover theft.

^Im sure different country view things differently and insurance policy will reflect this. I’m not sure if you are covered here in the UK if you leave the keys in the car but it something I have never done for the obvious reasons we read here but in the case of the OP it wasn’t his doing so no blame on his part.

No idea about the UK, but here in the US as long as you have comprehensive coverage on the car it’s covered for theft. If you lease or have a loan it will be required coverage. If you buy the car outright you only have to carry the very basic coverage called liability. One would have to be really foolish to do this with this nice/expensive of a car.

They will pay the cash value of the car at the time it’s stolen.
