F80 to F90
I’m looking to gauge opinion, I’m pretty disillusioned with the future M3 offerings. I’ve always loved driving a manual but the next generation will only offer the ‘base’ model as a manual. Plus having seen it at the M driving day I’m not sure I can love the front grill. It’s pretty... well.. unloveable.
If I have to go auto to get a decent spec I am most likely to go M5 comp. (Also watching to see what the M5CS comes in at price wise.) Has anyone here moved from the M3 to the M5? Is there anything you miss/regret? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. |

On paper the M5 does everything great but it's pedestrian looks and fact it simply doesn't feel sporty made me dump it fast

The F82 competition is much more fun to drive and more engaging. The F90 weights a lot more and you can't deny physics. The F90 can be incredible fast, and makes it all feel rather relaxing when the F82 has got your adrenaline pumping.
You should definitely drive the F90, this is really something that you'll feel almost immediately. |

I had my 2015 M3 (F80) for 4 years before switching to my 2018 M5 (F90) which I have had since August of 2018. I like the exhaust note of the F90 over the F80. I miss the size of the F80 over the F90. Even though the F90 is a large car it handles nice and I contribute that to the all wheel drive. I do not track any of my cars.
Last month I considered trading my F90 in for a 2020 Porsche 911 S but after a extended test drive in a 2020 911 S I decided for now the F90 is going to stay in the garage for a bit longer. The Porsche dealer allowed the wife and I to take the 911 out for a test drive by ourselves. If you want a car that handles like a go cart the 911 is a great option. |

I will switch at some point to the G80 no matter the grill. Change is good. |

brother has an f82, dad has an f90, significant seat time in both. f90 is boring, and much less tossable. Its a hoot off the line, (obviously).
You'll be at 120 before you knw it, and you wont feel a thing. |

If you don't need the big back seats don't bother with the F90, if you want a sporty feeling car.

The F90 is a luxury missile that will embarrass a lot of the flashier sports cars/coupes. It's a jack of all trades.

I went from X3MC to F90 M5. HUGE difference. Night and day cars. F90 is a great car.
On saying that the new M3/4 will be awesome with the new engine. The X3MC engine is fantastic and loved to rev. Still don’t think it will touch the F90 for overall completeness. I did think about holding out for the new M3/4 but just don’t see it competing with the F90 now I have one. Test drive might prove me wrong though.

I went from an F80 M3 to F90 M5 two years ago. Neither is competition. The M5 matches my “use case” almost exactly, the M3 didn’t. I wanted a true GT for very long drives with speed, comfort and ease of use. The M3 is a little more fatiguing (noise, firmness and seat comfort) than the M5 - about 8 hours max in the M3 and 12 in the M5 but still arriving in better shape in the M5. While I prefer a manual, the M5 auto is easier to live with and share with others than the M3 DCT.
For an around-town, shorter distance use case I might prefer the M3’s size, toss ability, etc. Certainly for the track I would prefer the M3, but I’d probably go to an E36/46 for that use. But since I don’t get mine out of the garage for anything other than a very long drive, the M5 is the beast for me. |
