Having fun with powerslides - MDM vs 2WD w/o DSC?
Hey,
The streets are empty nowadays, especially at night, so I've been having some fun night drives, trying to get into some corners sideways. I'm wondering what's your preferred setting for the hooligan mode. I'm not very experienced with RWD cars, so 2WD + DSC off is overwhelming for me, especially since my F90 is tuned to Stage 2, so there's a lot of power and things get scary/uncontrollable really quickly. I'm much more comfortable with MDM, although the slides I'm capable of doing don't seem super impressive. I'm wondering, a) what's your preferred set up, b) can you do those super long, rubber-burning slides with MDM on? c) any resources (youtube tutorials?) to help me with technique? Thanks! |

MDM mode will only allow for a certain amount of slip from the rear diff before cutting power. If you get it right (just right amount of wheel spin and angle) the car will slide slightly until the electronics step in. Fun but not hooligan fun.
If you shut off the TC fully you can of course spin the car out if you are not careful or have good car control skills under a drift. Find a parking lot with plenty of room, turn off the TC or go into 2wd, turn the wheel to a little less than half lock and give the car 2/3 throttle. Back end will come around and you have to play with steering input vs throttle to keep the slide going. Watch Drift videos on YouTube there are plenty of "how to" vids out there but so many people watch top gear and assume they can put a car into a full drift and recover correctly as to not send the car into a wall...harder than it looks! Get some practice in but keep in it MDM on the street for sure. Good luck! |

MDM is great, but don't think it will stop you kissing a tree - it can still get your arse chewing the seat in a corner!

I know there was a difference between Euro and North American MDM settings in the E92 M3. Is there still a difference now in our M5's?
