BMW Munich plant ceases ICE car production in 2027. Begins Neue Klasse EVs in 2026

BMW Munich plant to cease ICE car production in 2027

Neue Klasse EVs will be made at the site from 2026, closing the curtain on 75 years of combustion engine output

The BMW plant in Munich will produce only electric cars from 2027, following a €650 million (£560m) investment to expand and upgrade the 102-year-old site.

The German firm has confirmed that it will produce the first of its radical new Neue Klasse EVs – a saloon that will serve as the next-generation 3 Series – in Munich from 2026.

Initially that car will be produced at the Bavarian facility alongside ICE models, but by the following year, the plant will be fully dedicated to EVs – although BMW has yet to specify which models it will produce.

The €650m investment has involved the construction of four new buildings, including a new vehicle assembly line and a new body shop.

To create space for that, combustion engine manufacturing has been moved to Hams Hall in the UK and Steyr in Austria.

The switch to EV production in 2027 will end 75 years of ICE car production in BMW's home town.

The factory was opened in 1922 and initially produced motorcycles until car production moved there from Eisenach in 1952. The first car built at Munich was the 501.

At present the 3 Series (including the Touring estate, M3 and plug-in hybrid 330e and 320e models) is built at the site, along with the 4 Series Gran Coupι (including the electric i4). Munich produces around 1000 cars per day.

BMW will also produce Neue Klasse EVs in Debrecen, Hungary, from 2026, and they will later be built in Shenyang, China, and San Luis Potosν, Mexico.

We can expect to see a rapid maturing of this market in the next few years, with regards to battery efficiency/ range, charging infrastructure, and something that isn’t talked about much - used EV sales. That last bit - we still have a long way to go in terms of battery recycling, battery health verification (buying a used EV, a buyer would rightfully want to know the condition of the battery), and battery refurbishment/replacement.

I think we will also see an embrace from performance oriented carmakers, and some interesting innovations in “performance dynamics” for EVs.

It appears many people live in Fantasyland. CA has an entire state of these people.

This is why Hertz is having a fire sale on used Telsa’s, as Hertz loses money on rental EV’s due to higher maintenance costs than ICE. https://jalopnik.com/hertz-is-sellin...for-1851155899

I don’t live in Cali or the EU, mater of fact in the deep red state that BMW Manufacturing Co calls home in South Carolina. Ship the EV’s to Cali and the EU to have them deal with brown outs when everyone attempts to charge, as leave the rest of us alone with our ICE!! The oil industry has too much political power with lobbyists in DC, as this EV push will never succeed at a national level.

Automobile manufacturers have to plan in multi year cycles while quarterly sales and trends build momentum for changing these plans.

The EV sales and adoption will tell a story worth waiting for.

I don't understand why and how people assume things like this. I mean surely you follow a certain type of media, but look at the plans of ALL car manufacturers. They all have timelines in place to go full EV. How the heck 90% will be hybrid when no-one is selling them?

It's not something to agree or disagree on.
It's happening, it will happen.

Also, mining cobalt and lithium is bad for environment, but not nearly as bad as hundreds of millions of cars constantly putting exhaust gas in the air. Not even a percent of that. If you don't believe me, get in a garage, close the door, and turn on your engine. It's really not that great. Or, you can just pickup an elementary school science textbook to learn about greenhouse effect.

And 'no one wants these cars'? Seriously? Seems like you're getting your science & market news from political outlets.

Its hard to hear the message over all the whimpering and whining in here.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

This happens every time BMW introduces a new generation of car. So much bemoaning that they always used to be better than what we have now, or what is coming in future generations.

Guess what. Change always happens, always will.

Don't like the future generations? Don't buy it

Think the last generation or two was better? Buy a used car.

Think you can do better? Start your own car company.

Go wring your hands, but the writing is on the wall. BEVs are here, and will continuing coming.

If you're so obsessed with your fossil fuels, propping up the oil industry, and dumping carbon into our shared planet, I'm sure you can buy a RAM truck and idle it somewhere.

Electric car sales is one of the biggest segments showing year to year increases.

Here's some education on EVs, as it seems many need it:

You're commenting under the news that it's already happening, and decided. BMW's factory is being re-built so that they will only build EVs. Same with VW, Mercedes Benz, and all others. All the EU countries and U.S. put in place deadlines for ICE sales. And especially in Northern Europe, EV sales are already approaching 50% of new car sales.
And you still call it a fantasy. So you believe, they will all need to go back to build ICE engines huh? I wonder who's in the fantasyland

Destructive political propaganda aimed at uneducated and/or intellectually deficient and/or people who are incapable of diversifying their news sources - is the biggest problem of our time and the biggest obstacle towards progress.

I don't understand the people who say the demand isn't there. BMW had its best year ever in the US last year and Tesla matched that number in JUST MODEL Y sales. EV's have more demand than any other luxury vehicle already in the US and its only getting stronger. China also has a very high demand for EV's.
