The edge I was talking about is the type of skill level possessed by the test drivers who take these cars out on the Nurburgring for the BMW engineers.
A lifetime of driving on the Autobahn will not give you that level of expertise.

I think one needs more than track time. I know that my driving has improved after BMW's Advanced Driving Courses and my time at Bridgestone Racing.... I could have driven around the track without instruction as I did on day 1. On day 1 I was doibng laps in 1:20 and on day 3 at 1:05 - I was one of the slower ones. The really fast ones went from 1:20 down to 58 seconds.... (before anyone asks - no I do not know how long the track at Bridgestone Racing was)

I think that's where the autobahn experience comes in. I'm so used to going fast. 80 mph is painfully slow and I'm still doing 10-20 over. I think more americans (canadians include ) tend to be timid when they hit the track since they're not used to the speeds they hit. I've hit expansion joints around turns on the autobahn and got all 4 wheels off the ground at over 120 mph. I think most people would freak out and panick and end up in a ditch on fire.

From an M perspective.... probably:
PSS9 or KW3 coilovers AP Racing brake conversion Full exhaust system (w/ headers) AC Schnitzer Rear Diffuser If there was enough cash left - ESS Supercharger (in development for //M) I have the CSL wheels already, but if this were from standard, they'd go up there in that list as one of the first options - along with the PS2 rubber.

I don't need you to believe me. It's not like it was flying through the air for seconds. But you hit a bump fast enough an the wheels come off. I don't think it's that hard to believe.

I believe you, has happened to me on the Auotstradale (Italian version of the Autobahn). The roads have a joint for expansion, the same as American highways that use concrete slabs for the road surface. Going around a curve at 100+ you can feel the car hop as it hits each bump and if you are not used to it, it can be fairly exciting in a bad way. I had my MINI S up to 135 (electronically limited) several times on the Autostradale and it is something you get used to. The European drivers respect vehicles in the left lane and will stay out of the way of faster vehicles. Flash to Pass actually means something over there, instead of the Lemmings on the freeway here in the States. Cheers! |
