Does the AWE Track catback drone?

I've been searching the forum and couldn't find any posts.

Thanks for any input.

It does; any setup without a muffler will drone. The switch path is better if you are worried about the drone.

Wasn't aware AWE track used a muffler. Thought it was just a straight pipe.

Ah ok. That makes more sense. I've always wondered what actually is the difference between the two systems. Is there a small muffler built into the pipes behind the valves or something? Just don't see how the switch path version is actually different for AWE.

They are the same except the switchpath has 2 valves to decrease the sound. The track does not have any valves.

How does that prevent drone or less sound? It's a straight pipe system. The valves just make it dual exhaust instead of quad…this doesn't pass the sniff test.

it's quieter when you close the valves which make the drone less as well. Not saying this is the best exhaust if you are looking for a drone-free exhaust but it's better than the track.

I get that. I guess my point is why….it's a straight pipe into 4 pipes. How does simply blocking 2 of the pipes make it quieter. All the sound would most go to the 2 exhaust without something to dampen it. And how does that reduce drone.

That's what I've never understood and isn't expressed on their website.

I have the axle back switch path with a custom x pipe.
Before replacing secondary downpipes - no drone whatsoever
After replacing secondary downpipes - drone from 1800-2200 rpms.
I really only notice this drone in 8th gear when cruising at 80 on the freeway.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but does anyone have experience with just the AWE track Axle back? 18 base exhaust, how loud will this be? just deleting the rear section leaving the resonator and 4 cats. Still DD friendly? cant imagine it will be much louder than the TRX, it just has two inline bullet style mufflers for the entire exhaust.

If you can't afford a real exhaust don't buy a crappy one. Just save your money for McDonald's or something

I've just installed the switchpath it does increase resonance (drone) valves open or closed. Less audible drone when valves closed. It's not objectionable but it is there in that 1800-2200 rpm range. Stock DP and cats.

Im sure maverick is trolling a bit but his burning question about 2 outlets vs 4 - exhaust sound is a pulse wave not a continuous one and a change in geometry or blocking devices (valves / mufflers) will change perceived volume and frequency of those pulses. a muffler is typically a series of baffles to break the sympathetic pulse of the engines exhaust sound pulse. The same amount of expended gases is emitted without the sympathetic pulsing audio.

I'd like to hear how this isn't a "real" exhaust.

AWE makes awesome stuff, I had track exhaust on my RS3 and it was amazing. Just ordered one for my F90. I'm excited.

I have to say the AWE is pretty real - stainless mandrel bent 3" all the way through. I guess its lack of CHItanium and flame blued tips must make it not a real system.

I just ordered an AWE system. I will update after the install on sound / drone. So far just communicating with them has been great. They have quick turn around time on email answeres. To me that is a tremendous win even before receiving the system.

Hey Mike!
I’ve been contemplating on some exhaust options for my F90 LCI M5 Comp. I’m guessing you’ve worked with almost all reputable exhaust brands and hence I’m asking this question to see if it can help put an end to my never ending research and state of confusion.

What according to you is the best exhaust for the M5? I’m looking for a loud but least raspy setup, something that can accentuate the V8’s rumble. I’m also planning catless secondaries to go with it. Not touching primaries.

Would greatly appreciate your response. Thanks!
