Just noticed I have the same stains in the same location on my backseat.

21 with Aragon Brown.

I guess it’s off to the dealer for some BS (I’ll definitely keep this thread handy).

Quick update:

took my car in yesterday and the dealership doesn't know what's causing the stain but they will be replacing the entire backseat. The part is in stock in Germany so they said it'll be about a month before it shows up. Apparently the backseat doesn't just pop out and said it's a 4-5 hour job

Hopefully they will cut it open and determine the cause.

I too started to see black stains on my back seats. Also Aragon Bronwn seats, As soon as I notice them I use Armor All with beeswax. Spray on a microfiber cloth and wipe it down. I have no clue how it gets the stains.

My dealership is still waiting on BMW’s response. My service rep said he noticed it on his M240 red interior too. My fear is it will happen even after replacement. Then what?

Are you guys folding the seats down? Maybe the black seat belt casing is rubbing when it is down?

Either that or Dirty Mike and the boys were partying back there.

Yes, I fold the seats down when carrying my surf boards. It has transferred to the upright cushions as well, but definitely not originating from the upright portions.

I only know of myself and the fiancée that have been in the back seats 😉

Sticker?

I find this whole thread fascinating. Here's my guess as to what is happening. The leather pieces have stickers on the underside to identify the piece and those stickers have an adhesive that is bleeding through.

Any update on this? This was one of those issues I would love to know what the root cause is. It's so weird and unique in the pattern.

A mystery unsolved!

Backseat finally came in from Germany. I have an appointment for Dec. 6th to get new seat installed, I'll ask then if they can figure out where stains are coming from (I don't have high hopes, I'm sure they'll just pull old seat out and replace and say I dunno what's causing it).

The spots are perfectly rectangular and are the same dimensions as the seatbelt buckle receivers. That isn't a coincidence. I bet it is only happening to people who either 1. Have had passengers in the rear seats with belts buckled and/or 2. Fold the seats down regularly. It's transfer of pigment or chemical offgassing from the black plastic seatbelt buckles.

Nope wrong, I’ve never had anyone in backseat since car was new and almost never have backseats folded down.

Ok, let us know if a more likely explanation arises for rectangular dark spots immediately adjacent to rectangular seatbelt buckles.

Trust us, the seat buckles are not the cause. There must be corner reinforcements underneath the leather itself and whatever adhesive/color/pad is bleeding up and through the top side.

I plan to bring car back to dealer next week as they need the regional tech to take a look.

Bumping this thread. I have an appointment with the dealer on Monday for service and want to have this looked at as well. Any recent experiences from those that have pursued warranty replacement?

Curious how it goes for you on Monday. I just found this thread today when I noticed the same thing on my back seat. Nobody ever sits back there and the car is kept in the garage. Has just turned 4,000 miles and isn't even commuted to work, so it's not like high temperatures & sun are doing something to the buckles. I attached a picture of the leather behind the center seatbelt as well, which shows the black plastic doesn't seem to be the culprit here (as we've already concluded). Tried cleaning with some Sonax leather cleaner, but it's definitely not coming out.

Anyway, I am going in on Friday to have my M Performance Exhaust installed, so this will be something they need to look at while it's there.

<I removed the picture links and posted them later in the thread>

You need to click on the thumbnail to open a larger version. Still not sure how this forum handles embedded images. Tried a few earlier and they just showed the text, even though I used the "insert image" option.

I had my Aragon Brown back seat replaced in December under warranty and the replacement seat already was showing the staining by one of the seatbelts which shows the staining issue is still prevalent. No one at my dealership had an answer for root cause

I’ve traded my M5 in late December so that was my permanent fix
