Santa didn't buy me a new MacBook Pro, but I think it will magically appear next month.

I'm typing this on a mid-2012 MBP with an Intel i5 and 16GB RAM. It works ok, but starts to overheat with anything involving graphics. Still, no complaints. It's lasted me 8 years, so I've got my money's worth out of it. Looking at a new 13" MBP with the M1, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. The only thing making me hesitate is the rumor of a soon to be announced 14" MBP with more ports. But that could be a year from now, so it might not be worth waiting.

Literally quite similar. Only change is I can’t type on my 2012 mbp as it died. First one to die as my 2006 old school white MacBook is still working...

Nonetheless, I couldn’t nor would I wait. I get more ports is cool, but I grabbed this and it’s got all the ports I need to use at once really

USB C Hub Multiport Adapter - 7 in 1 Portable Space Aluminum Dongle with 4K HDMI Output, 3 USB 3.0 Ports, SD/Micro SD Card Reader Compatible for MacBook Pro

It literally matches perfectly.

Cool. I've also seen the cordless adapter that just plugs into the two USB-C ports and then gives you a ton of other ports. I'll be ordering mine through the university bookstore to get the discount, so it'll have to wait until the first week we're back in January. I bought a new 27" iMac back in the spring, and it's lightning fast, so I'm looking for the same speed for my laptop.

Pro tip from an old man....buy yourself whatever you want and place it under the tree with a note it is from Santa. Your wife can't argue because the kids will start to ask "what do you mean Santa is not real?"

Santa brought us a surprise on Christmas Eve in the form of a broken washing machine. Got 15 years out of the Bosch washer, which is a miracle with our well water that eats pipes and anything metal. Since Bosch doesn't sell adult-sized washers in the USA any more and local repair folks don't want to touch them, it was time to put it out to pasture.

Not-Santa dropped over $2,600 on a new washer/dryer set on Boxing Day yesterday, after upgraded warranties, installation accessories, tax, etc. Because 2020 and the continuing constraints on large appliance supplies, we had to drop the coin on $$$$ premium units because all of the cheaper units are back-ordered for a month or more. In addition, we had to order from two different places, because nobody locally had both the washer and dryer in stock at the same location.

Not-Santa also dropped a surprise laundry room re-model on us, while the washer/dryer are out for a few days.....

Wow, I hear you on that one! Our 20 year old clothes washer went belly up, so we decided to replace both the washer and same-age dryer. Then the next day, our dishwasher went tits-up! Same thing: we had to buy a high-end dishwasher, plus not the color we wanted simply because there isn't much available. Take it or leave it!

Beyond that, our new appliances are super-quiet compared to the old ones.

I have the new M1 Air with the 8 core processor and 512 gb HD... unless you are doing heavy video editing or something extremely tasking... don't even waste money on the pro, the Air is nearly identical and blows my mind how powerful it is.

Also... only gift here... a jacket from kohl's... probably paid for using Kohl's cash lol.

So we moved into our new home 2 months ago. We knew we'd have to replace the stove as it is 16 years old and the only appliance that hasn't been updated. What we didn't realize was that it has a downdraft vent feature built in, it is LP gas and on our island. I have no room to put in an above stove range hood and there is literally no stoves with built in downdraft that are gas, I don't have 220V on the island and it would be very difficult and expensive to rewire it so now I have to buy and install a downdraft vent system as well as the stove. My wife loves to cook, we had a 36" Wolf in the last place and want to do that again but with the downdraft we are looking at $15K all in. Almost every other stove on the market has a digital component that I want to avoid, I don't for the life of me know why anyone needs a Wifi/Siri equipped stove. Anyway, we are heading out to look at a few options but I suspect we will end up going either 30 or 36'' Wolf.

Merry Christmas to me.

Santa did not buy me a torque wrench...so I went middle of the road, price-wise, and bought a Sealey AK623B. Hopefully it'll work well enough for me!

Our older (2012-ish?) entry-level 300-series Bosch dishwasher started acting weird at the end of cycles last spring, and I decided to replace it a few months ago with a new mid-range 500-series Bosch. Scored the last one in stock at my favorite regional appliance chain, with free delivery to my door in a few days (because we live at the very edge of their sales/delivery region). We went from an already-quiet 50dBA to a whisper-quiet 44dBA. I believe that the top-tier Bosch was sub-40 dBA, but their web site doesn't even list it any more because it is unobtanium.

I'm not really happy about the timing of the washer/dryer purchase, because we just decided a few weeks ago that we are not going to do any more home improvements and are focusing our resources point forward on a scratch-built retirement house in a slightly warmer climate. I'd rather not move them, but we'll see what happens when we get to that point.....
