M5 Comp LCI Winter Setup?

Hey guys,

Picked up my 2021 M5 Comp not long ago and I'm in Northern NJ. I need to get a winter setup ASAP. Reading through the forums it's pretty much down to 2 options:

1. OEM 19" Winter Square Setup 705M
2. Winter Tires (Sottozeros Series 2) on stock 20" wheels

Looking for some feedback here. The car won't be driven in heavy snow but it will still be used regularly through the winter months. What do you guys recommend? What's your experience in driving in the winter months with your setup? If you have the OEM Winter setup are you running spacers? Thanks!

Yes you definitely need winter tires. You also have another option "OEM 19" winter staggered setup", 265 front and 285 rear, which I currently use on my car. I bought it from the dealer when I collected the car. It comes with Michelin tires. It works great for me. Good luck and stay safe!

i went with option 2, Michelin winter on stock 20''s . looks way better than having 19s on the car

I had sottozeros on my 18 m5 and did the same on my 21 comp.

The sottozeros are great in the snow and reasonably priced. I just got my 21 2 weeks ago and just swapped to winters last Friday. I could definitely feel the difference between the summers and winters and it hasn't even been terribly cold of late.

I'm in Essex county NJ so we have pretty much the same weather.

Yes, we definitely have the same exact weather. So your M5 is perfectly fine in the winter with the Sottozeros on the stock 20s? Do you mind sharing the tire size you used for the Sottozeros? I'm leaning more toward that same setup if it works fine around NJ area.

Yes the sottozeros are on them now.

I got the setup attached - but I bought them off a member on this forum who used them for one season.

I'm running 275/35/20 all around. With 12mm fr and 10mm rear lowered on H&R m550 springs. And I'm also running nokian hakkapiillita 9's. By far the best winter tire out there. This beast is a traction monster. The nokian r3's are just as good. The pirellis don't compare. Actually they suck I have them on my wife's x1.

I have Sottozeros on the stock 20” wheels, in Boston. Same size as the stock Michelin PS4s. I mostly drive on the highway and I think they're very good at highway speeds in dry and wet weather and handling is decent for a snow tire (of course nowhere as good as the Michelin PS4s, excellent tires until you get below 45 degrees). M5 is great in the snow with the only handicap being the ground clearance. Tough getting the timing right on tire changeover with the large swings in temps in New England, I typically swap in late November/early December and early April but inevitably you’ll get some 60-70 degree days where you shouldn’t be on snow tires.

I'm in Boston also and was questioning getting winters for when I take delivery end of feb or just riding it out for a month or so and then transition in November. What do you think?

I am also just Northwest of Boston. Sottozero 285 square set up. If I were taking delivery late Feb I would swap over to the winter tires. It has a lot to do with low temps as well.

Still have a month or so of potential snow, but it’s a fair point and would be nice to push off buying snows. Will be annoying to swap on snows and take them off a month later. If you can stay in or have something else to drive when it snows that’s preferable. Otherwise, you can’t drive in the snow with summer tires. This is my daily driver so need to be able to drive it in the snowy / icy conditions. If it snows and you have summers on, you either won’t be able to move at all or there’s a good chance you slide into something even at slow speeds. If I were taking delivery at end of Feb and it was my only car, I’d bite the bullet and get the snows. The car is absolutely awesome - congrats!

I'm running a staggered setup, 245/40/20 up front and 275/35/20 in the rear. I live in Calgary AB and we get heavy snowfalls. Didn't want super wide tires up front pushing snow on those nasty days. I'm running Kumho Wintercraft WP72's I've had Pirellis on my previous car and was not impressed considering the outrageous price for them.

So I've read some people run 285/35/20 on front and rear on stock 20" rims. Any issues with this setup? I'm having trouble finding the right set of winter tires. Do I need spacers in rear to compensate for wider tires in the front?

Did you keep them on the same wheels? If yes, what does that do to the wheel & tire insurance/warranty?

I was told by finance person at the dealership that as long as wheel was OEM it would be covered.

I do need to verify if that's true
