USB Drive in Glove Compartment Doesn't Work!
Hey guys!
Tried plugging my usb flash card into the usb drive in the glove compartment to transfer music and my idrive is not reading it. I tried turning the engine on/off and plugging/replugging it and it still won't read. However when I put it into the armrest usb drive it reads it fine. Is something wrong with the drive in the glove compartment? Any help would be greatly appreciated because I really don't want to take it to the dealership. Thanks. |

Works perfectly on my '08. I use it instead of an iPod. I just copied the MP3 files into an empty USB and no problems. Recognizes folders and everything. And I always shorten/abbreviate long album titles to leave more characters for the song names. That replaces a CD changer I have on all my other cars. Can't imagine anything changing in 2010/11. And HDD came out since '09 . Maybe one of the audio experts will chime in shortly with a solution. Good luck.

From the owners manual it seems that the glove box USB connection is for backup and restore of your Music collection ONLY.. The USB in the center console is for either Ipod, Iphone or a Fat32 partition USB. Make sure the USB is formated to Fat32 and not MAC or NTFS..

Question relating to this. Is there a special cord I need to run my ipod through the USB port? Or do I need to get one of those iPod systems that EAS sells?

Depends what option you have on the car. If you have iDrive, you have a USB port in the glove compartment that supports transferring music from USB only. If you also have the iPod/USB option, you have a USB port inside the handrest which you just need a Y cable to connect to your iPod. The cable should be provided when you take delivery but can also be purchased at the parts department if you lost it.

i have an '11 with the same problem. i thought maybe it was the drives i've been using (sandisk cruzer), but other members have been fine with them apparently. maybe it's something with the '11s? nobody else seems to have any issues...

Sorry Folks I have been typing Fat32 where the correct Filesystem is FAT reformat your USB stick to FAT or Fat 32 and no other partition should be on it.. as BMW CIC only can read the first partition.
please see page 3 on this pdf http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/nav...?download=true Windows machine: Plug in the USB stick, goto my computer, right click, format on the usb stick, in file partition pick FAT or FAT32 depends on the system.. For me FAT32 works as Fat only supported small devices. After format put folders of Mp3 right on the volume.. DONE MAC OSX machine: Plug in the USB stick, goto Applications > Utility > Disk Utility, pick the USB volume pick the ROOT not the sub partition, Chose FAT in the format table (Fat32), After format put the folders of MP3 right on the Volume.. Done. In the CAR: Plug in the USB stick in the glove box. goto Music collection.. Hit option or click twice to the right, goto the bottom choose Import collection If you formatted the USB correctly you will see a new option that states Import USB... Let me know if this works

Thanks dude. Can you help me with my question? Will buying the y cable help me connect my ipod. Is there anyway to check if I have that hookup capability with the VIN?

sorry, i meant brand.
i have been trying to use 8GB sandisk cruzers with no luck. both have been formatted to FAT, i've looked for other partitions, and even used both win XP and mac OSX to do the formatting. therefore, i'm thinking sandisk may be the problem, and am looking to buy another brand (hopefully with high data transfer speeds, etc.). |
