2019 M5C Lease is Maturing - Thinking about an X3MC

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My 2019 M5C lease is expiring in ~1 month (actually got BMW to expend for 2 months to give me more time to figure out options).

Found a 2023 X3MC at my dealership - has 200 miles (owner returned it after 3 week due to too much power, ride quality, etc).

In any event, thoughts on this move from the M5 to the X3M?

My other option is to just buy out the lease @ ~$71K (the X3M is ~$82K).

I enjoy the M5 and the default option was to buy out the lease - after 3 years, I have the itch for something new.

Let me know your thoughts and if anyone else has made a trade/swap like this.

I don’t think those vehicles are even comparable. You may run into some bias here, but I vote M5 all day. If you need more utility space I can maybe say that makes sense, but the X3M is kind of small… let us know what you end up doing, best of luck!

I think you might find yourself wanting to return it for... Not enough power, ride quality, etc. Not that it's a bad vehicle but just in comparison.

+1 — these two cars are galaxies apart.

I assume the point of this is due to the relatively close price points.

But yes. I don’t think the X3 body style and tech is gonna give you something better. Certainly more whippy for something so small with so much power but not the same.

X5M would be much better.

I would consider an LCI or maybe an M8GC coming off of lease.

For someone who has changed vehicles more than socks the past few years, my answer is: Depends!

Are you bored with m5 and wanting to try something as Resp pointed out above is “galaxies apart” and likely a fun little ride with some utility as well? Then do it. If you have thoroughly enjoyed the m5, then buy it out, get another, or try out a M8 like Maverick suggested.

Edit: If finances afford, don’t buy it out. At least get an LCI if you want to stay with M5

So I ordered an X4M after a test drive, and before test driving an M5. I was coming out of an F80 ZCP. I’ll just share my quick thoughts.

1. That low end lag is very annoying. I know exactly how to make up for it, but trying to drive it spooled, with just the right settings gets a bit annoying. I’m cool with that with a fun, light, manual car, but not in my DD with an auto. When I dip into the throttle, I want that car to *move*. Some people just live with it, don’t mind it or whatever, but I found it really against the grain of what this car should be.

2. I test drove a pre-LCI, so maybe it’s improved now, but the “harshness” that people complained about wasn’t uncomfortable to me, it was simply jarring in some conditions, to the point I had to really grip the wheel when sending it lol.

3. It’s lovely at speed. The power delivery is just as it should be. These things cook.

4. It’s not an M5, in spite of the shared mechanical and drivetrain bits.

5. A week into my order I saw an M5 on the road, and because I had waffled a bit on ordering an X3/X4M versus an M5, I got to thinking I might regret not just going for the extra $ on an M5. I test drove one, and it was lights out for anything else. I backed out of my X4M order, and picked up an M5 lease assumption, and never looked back.

I think the F97/8 platform is really great, but if it’s that or an M5, they are incredibly different, and not really comparable, inside or out.

I’ll be pretty direct and bold. You do not want an x3mc.

Sold my 22 f90 becuase I didn’t feel I was using it enough. Had planned to wait out an allocation for a g80 so picked up a f97 while I waited.

The car has pretty good power above 3k rpm’s. And that’s the only nice thing I can say about it. The fit, finish and quality of materials compared to an m5 isn’t even close. I found the seats to be outright horrible. Always felt like the left bolster was in the back of my thigh and that the seat was canted to the right. Horrible seating position and I’m not a big guy. Mine was pretty much loaded. 82k msrp.

I’ll just say this in closing. Every time I’ve sold or traded a bmw I could look back and say I’m really going to miss that car. When the f97 went on the truck to go to her new owner I said good riddance multiple times.

And all those who come in and say but it’s a true m car in an suv are full of it. Becuase in the next breath they’ll tel you how it needs bigger tires and better brakes. Yes it does have pretty high limits but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s 5000 pounds w a lot of weight up high (mine had the pano roof and a spare tire)

I’d buy out if I were in your shoes. Or lease a m8.

You will be bored out of your mind. Buy your M5 off lease.

If you want something new and a SUV go with X5M or Range RoverBut honestly I would buy out your car and keep it. M5 is just so good.

I’ve owned both the M5 and the X3MC. If you really love the M5 but want more utility room, X5MC is the choice. I own it too.

Or, maybe you'll love the X3MC, never even heard of it, we all use too many acronyms...so, if you've driven this MC car for 30 plus minutes, or whatever it's called, and you love it, just get it. I mean, why not? It's a car, it will get you around, it's probably cool looking, we only go around once. Just do it man!

I had the 21 X3m non comp for almost a year and then i bought 18 M5 with the mindset to drive it on weekends, but the moment i bought it ,my X3m was just sitting, there was a time i think i didn't drove it for almost 3 months 😂,the difference is really big even that you're looking at LCI X3MC the technology will not make up for it and the power defference is huge ,oh and that ride was absolute sh*t ,so i sold it and now living with my M5 and it's not even a Competition

Cheers hope you make the right choice for you

^ this

I've got 28K miles on my '21 X3MC.

I use the paddle shifters 90% of the time, even in stop & go traffic. Why? So I'm always in the right gear. I never get caught out in the low-RPM-no-power scenario. The S58 is a great engine. But at least in the X3MC, the low end grunt is a bit frustrating for a daily. I haven't driven the G8x, but with less weight, the problem is mitigated a bit.

My next M would be an F90, but they're going out of production before I can jump into a new car, so I'll get either a used F90, or a new G80. Like many here, I just get bored every few years and want something else - the X3MC is a great all around car and I love mine. The ride ain't that bad.

If you really need or want an SUV, drive an X5M , Cayenne GTS or Cayenne Turbo.
