How tossable is the new M5?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I started a thread last month: "How tossable is the M550?" The general consensus was... it was sporty, surprisingly agile, fast, but given the size and weight, not as freely tossable as a 3-series. More of a fast highway cruiser. (I saw an M550 on the road a few weeks ago; more aggressive looking than the 5 series, but not as aggressive as I'd hoped.) For those of you who drive the new M5, what is it really like in terms of agileness? How sharply can you take a turn? And I don't mean on the track, I mean, driving in a neighborhood and not braking for a turn (assuming no pedestrians/cyclists around and dry roads and good tires...). Is it a car that wants to be tossed around or driven in a straight line? Is it so big that one feels cramped on city streets or narrow roads? Or not able to make a lane change? I ask b/c eventually it will come down to M3 vs M5 for me, and I do love the luxury, quiet and size of the 5... but I do love the maneuverability of the 340 I drive today (and the M3 is more tossable). |

it would seem that the M5's muscular suspension and handling can mitigate the size and weight of it in the corner much more than the M550 |

I liken it more to slalom skiing. Not that I do that but even an M3 driven hard through an autocross is no ballerina. It feels more like a skier having to throw his weight around through the gates. If the new M5 has balance and grip, it can get the job done. Even the F10 M5 is surprisingly capable, just not very communicative while doing so and hard to maintain balance.
