I beg to differ, I whole-heartedly believe that the 3 is a sports car. It is not as extreme as some, but it DOES classify as a sports car, hence its sporting nature. The whole purpose is that driving the car is that it is involving. THen again, i do agree with some of you who state that it is a compromise between versatility and sports uses. But i cant see how you guys dont think the 3 is not a sports car.
is this to say that the 5 series is not a sports car. (m5 and lesser versions)

I wonder if the Euro 325i (2.5l) sounds different to the US 325i (3.0l)? The Euro model has the three stage intake of the 330i. My car, whilst sounding a bit 'electrical' at low RPM when you lift off the throttle, makes a beautifully cultured BMW growl higher up the rev range.

I have owned a pretty extensive list of BMW 3's and I have to say I kinda like the 325's sound.
My other cars: 87' 325is 92' 325i 95' m3 95' 525i 01' 530i 01' 330i 5 spd <--- BEST sound 02' m3 coupe 6 spd 01' m3 conv. 6 spd <--- worst car EVER 04' m3 coupe 6 spd <--- favorite drive 06' 325i auto from driving these cars back to back aside from the m3 coupes which the 04 replaced the 02 i had all of them to drive day to day. no bmw has sounded better than the deep sound of the e46 330i IMO... but that car also had quicker handling and steering response than the m3 conv. I will be putting a aftermarket muffler on the e90 325i in the next week or so but i have great hopes for the new sound. its just a little quiet stock but the note is great compared to the e46 m3 which sound like shit, no matter what exhaust you put on those are raspy and terrible sounding. i had complete eisenmann (sp?) titanium setup for the 04' m3 and although i put it on at different stages ie. midpipes, muffler, headers it never got rid of the terrible buzz note... just my experience but if you want your car to sound louder just buy an aftermarket exhaust. but know that the engines note or sound will not change drastically.
