Even after the initial break-in period I doubt it will ever breach the 500kms per tank mark on combined highway and city driving.

It will be tough on a 53litre fuel tank..:iono:

My 330Ci fuel economy just got better and better over the first 5K km.

Joe, I can help you lower your bank account. Just give me a call mate.

Prateek, I am not sure about the 100 octane. I would definitely not recommend any ethanol in the car. I have read that it can corrode certain rubber components. Porsche for example do not recommend ethanol in the fuel at all. I asked the head mechanic about putting V-Racing in my 911 and he politely ask me to stay away from it.

so then what is the consensus about the best fuel in melbourne?! i am confused.

i read somewhere a while back that shell was the "purest" for cars and mobil for motorcycles. has anyone else heard that or is it just bovine scytology (in other words, bullshit)?

Prateek what Wayne is saying about 100 with ethanol is true.

When I asked the BMW service department I got the same reply as Wayne got from Porche.
they concluded in saying one tank now and then wont hurt, hence my reply earlier.

I just thought that they really didint have an answer either and where playing safe with their reply..

Prateek just ask your BMW service centre and see what sort of response you get from them..
I would be interested to hear what they have to say..

For my 2 cents...

Using up to 10% ethanol fuel won't do any harm to your BMW regardless what the dealer says. The fuel lines and seals have been ethanol compatible for many years.

Now regarding V Power Racing (100) on my race car (carburetor/ignition timing tuned), I've seen no dyno result differences between running AVGAS (contains lead to boost RON rating) and V Power Racing. And that was after playing with tuning to see if changing things would make a difference. It didn't so went back to my normal mixture and ignition settings. So that indicates Shell's 100 fuel is good.

Though I haven't done it personally yet, other racing guys have dyno'd Caltex Vortex 98 vs. V Power Racing and found no difference. Most racing folks running PULP tend to prefer Vortex 98. I simply run V Power Racing is my closest servo stocks, where as any Safeway/Caltex's near me just have normal Vortex.

I suppose the moral is, whatever was the maximum octane rating that BMW tuned the engine on, using a fuel with a better octane rating will yield NO difference.

I've never noticed performance differences with any of the 98 fuels in my 120i, but have had sulfur smelly issues on the occasional basis with Shell V Power (98). On that basis my preference is BP Ultimate.

The inside of the fuel flap door on my X5 4.8 says Unleaded RON 93- RON 102 or higher I have to take a look inside the 135i flap again but I cannot recall it saying RON 102

I presume that's mostly open road cruising?

At 100k on the flat, in sixth, it averages 7-8L/100k. Out of 50 litres, that should give you atleast 550-600 k's (hopefully).

Would love to hear how you do once you're up and running.

When I've talked to folks like Derek from European Autotech, they've said don't touch it the 100 octane stuff.

G'day, fellas...

Just to keep those of us back in N America tuned in, what are you currently paying per liter for the 'high priced spread' that a BMW expects to be fed?

FWIW we're currently seeing USA prices of roughly $4.30 USD/U.S. gal (tho' it varies 6-7% around the country). However, that price is a moving target and has only been headed in one direction this year.

Just paid AUD 1.66/litre for BP 98 Octane. 1 US gallon = 3.79 litres. So that's AUD 6.30/US Gallon. At currrent conversion that's near enough USD 6/gal.

95 Octane was 1.54/litre. That's USD 5.60/gal.

These prices are for inner metropolitan on a Monday. Tuesday is our "low price day", so expect a 2-3% reduction for that day. We have a long-weekend coming up (bank holiday), so price should rise by +5% by Friday.
