My DD is a 16 year old Saab but TBH I enjoy it because zero fucks. It's damn near impossible to keep a DD in decent shape around here. The sports car lives a babied life but i try to flog it once a week at least.

I miss the days when people just bought cars they loved instead of buying based on depreciation. Yeah I know these are expensive—but where is the enthusiasm?!

If you're buying a car as an investment, you're not enjoying the car and obviously don't care for the ROI.

Other people have different priorities than both of you, and I'm one of them.

I love cars, and like experiencing a vast range of things, from Z06's, RS3's, E63s, 911s, Mclarens, etc etc. The one thing I don't like is getting to drive it for a year or so then getting my wallet blown out by crippling depreciation. It's all fun and games when you realize 20-30 or even more thousand dollars of depreciation loss when you trade in your toy on another toy because the value is that bad.

Some depreciation is unavoidable, but if you have the choice and are shopping for experiences it's something that you have to consider. Are you comfortable throwing away that money getting brand x when brand y is mostly the same? That's the cost of that experience, and others don't value it as much as you did which is why x depreciated more. It also means you're in a worse position when it comes time to sell/swap because that entire market will be softer. Case in point - Look at Plaid's right now.

Honestly, if you swap cars the cheapest fun car you'll ever own is 911. It really is that simple, at the very least they hold their value.

x2, have had 7 911's and made a good chunk of money driving them. Biggest loss I've had so far was $1k for a GT3 that I drove for a year, but would also now be worth around $25k more than I sold it for 4 years ago. Will probably lose some on the 992 GTS when I sell but can't complain. 981 GTS are still selling for more than they were 4 years ago too.

The used car market is adjusting itself. A lot of used cars are not selling for the same money that they were during the pandemic and the dealers are still not adjusting to the change.

If you look at the online auctions many are not selling (Reserve not met) and some are going for less than what they paid for during the pandemic.
Prices are down roughly 10% on certain used cars from their peak during the pandemic

People are still asking pandemic money but they are just sitting for months now on car sites without selling

1. Avoid German, depreciation hits those harder for most budget minded examples. Yes there are outliers, don't expect to be one. Better yet get a Tundra, Tacoma, Sienna, Maverick or Raptor at MSRP. Family vehicles crushing the resale game still.

2. The market is correcting. Trade-in values for the CGR, ITR, etc. have dropped and more cars are selling at MSRP again. Dealer offered $41.5K for a friend's GRC mid-summer, that is down to $40K now with no miles added. Dealers are still charging $5K premiums on used cars when I can find a new car at MSRP if I look around and wait 1-2 months.

car culture wasn’t always this consumerist driven—like it is today. Guess I’m old school like that.

Why have one car when you can have many for little to no cost? You aren't going to live forever. I want to experience them all. Can't imagine keeping a car for 3-5 years let alone 20. 6-12 months is enough, then on to the next one. The unicorn hunt is part of the fun.

I'm that way with the S2000. Unfortunately, most cars just don't feel special, or really unique. I've driven only a handful of cars that I'd say grab me by the balls and speak to me that I don't care about the financial investment involved.

I dunno man, maybe different there to here but I was poking around a few weeks ago looking at very, very basic used cars less than 5 years old and less than 30K miles and jesus effing christ, it's like $25K for an off warranty Tuscon. Like really?

Couldn't agree more. My first BMW is the one in my avatar, my E30 that I bought in 1998. I've had a lot of cars come and go over the years but the E30 has been the one constant. At this point the value to me is all of the memories I have in it more than the actual car itself. Those are priceless, which is at least partially why it's still in the garage.

Are they selling for that price?

I`m talking about certain sports cars that the prices went all out of wack during the pandemic.

All types of vehicles were going for stupid money during the pandemic.
Some people and dealers are still asking pandemic prices but not many are selling for those prices.

They have to be selling at that price because that is the cheapest I can find, i was stunned how expensive they are.

I have not been watching the sports car market but surely prices have had to come down from 2021. In saying that , good quality 997.2 manual Carrera S coupes are now a whopping 6 figures in Canada, that absolutely does my head in.

They can not be much more than that brand new.

997.2 Carrera S manual coupe is a desirable 911. Not many were produced.
I read an article a while back that said approximately 7000 coupes and 4000 convertibles were produced in both 6 speed manual and automatic (PDK).
