Hey all, I am thinking about converting my wheel bolts over to steel studs (not titanium) and using some Project Kics R40 Iconix M14 Lug Nuts.

Does any have any photos of this stud conversion done on their F90 and can please share?

I can only maybe 2 or 3 examples online, I know FSHNGRY is running FC Titanium set and they look fantastic, can anyone else chime in please?

I run studs from Future Classic. There were not many options when I was shopping. Usually I buy Bimmerworld’s race/premium studs. I can say that the 80mm I have are longer than you need even with 12/15mm spacers on stock wheels.

Would you be so kind to share some pictures of your set up with that length. I was considering going with 78mm studs.

Having had plenty of regular stud failures on non-EU cars in the past....

WHY would you add another element to the system that might fail?

BMW/Merc/Volvo/Audi have kept the "wheel bolt" system for years for a reason.

I did the stud conversion. Motorsports Hardware Titanium. I’m running 20X11fr and 20X12r Anarky Wheels. No spacers. No issues.

They are beautiful though. I would never track them and I don’t have any canyons near me to push the car past the typical 100+ run up the express lanes to work/home.

I understand that European manufacturers us bolts but every single American manufacturer uses studs.

Since this is my first vehicle that has wheel bolts, I can definitely say that mounting the wheel on a vehicle with studs is much easier to do than a vehicle with bolts.

Factory studs are pressed on from behind. By design they are stronger than aftermarket screw in studs. There may be a company doing replacement hubs with pressed in studs for some BMW models but not sure about the F90.

As for clamping force, it should be the same. It is more a strength or durability issue. Probably has to do with the stud being threaded from one end to the other and having 2 attachment points versus the bolt being one solid piece at the bolt head.

You can buy a wheel hanger — essentially 1 extra long stud you thread in and slide the wheel onto to make installing bolts easier. They you unscrew it and put the last bolt in its place.

Some install screw in studs anyway and have no issues. Just don’t use cheap ones and if you track, check them yearly and consider replacing them every year or 2. I don’t track, but use studs on my E36 M3 and F90 M5 and also used them on my E90 M3.

No. It adds one more movable/replaceable part to a mechanism that needs no more moving parts. It boils down to do you wish to add a stud that depends on splines to prevent turning. If it fails, you have to drill it out.

Wheel security for either is the same (given the same number of lugs and similar pitch/engagement). A set of threads is torqued down and holds the wheel onto the hub.

Having had multiple stud failures in my Pre-BMW days, I like the wheel bolts better. They are more fiddly when changing, but when the bolts threads get buggered, I pull another one out of the bag and put it in the hole. Throw the old one away.

If this helps any on your decision to convert to wheel studs. I've converted every BMW I have owned without any issues. I've ran wheel studs on my E46 M3 racecar for over 5 years and it hasn't failed on me yet. Matter fact, last year I crashed my racecar into the jersey wall, front impact. Wheels snapped but studs still in one piece (visually). Will replace them for peace of mind.

On that note, I bought a set of Matt Schnell wheel studs and will be converting my M5.

Agree here. Quality stud or don’t do it. Steel are more ideal if you’re concerned so to their more elastic nature than Ti+ but I went for looks and lack of corrosion and as I said I don’t track this car.

Raceseng, macht Schneider, and future classic have quality kits. I went with the future classic because they were available otherwise Raceseng would have been my primary choice.
