From G80 to F90
Over the weekend I traded in my 2022 G80 M3 for a 2022 F90 M5. Low mileage and optioned right (for me) with Comp, Exec, and B&W.
The G80 was an amazing car and the two couldn't be more different. The G80 was more raw and as a result honestly felt faster than the M5, however the speedo and how quickly it build tells a different story, it's just so much more insulated. |

Congrats!!! And enjoy every minute it only gets faster the more you drive it.
I also went from G80 to F90 and could not be happier. The feeling it gives every single time I drive it is incredible. It has no confusion as to what it is trying to be which was my gripe with the G80. It was fast and a little more raw but was so numb I could not get over it being somewhat of a GT cruiser or a sports car. I felt like its identity was lost because of that. The M5 on the other hand knows that its a luxury sedan thats fast as shit and capable at handling. I know what it is every single time. more comfortable more executive more speed more engine no confusion on numbness. Thats not to say the G80 isnt great because frankly I loved how it looked so menacing (I know Im in the minority but the sales numbers and amount of compliments speak for themselves). G80 was very fast and was extremely capable of handling and felt very safe always. Its a clear winner but for me I went in under the impression of getting a spirited sports car that could also carry 5 people and had 4 doors and maybe thats my mistake. Either way- I think you will love the F90 and appreciate it for what it is. Congrats again! |

Two close friends of mine both have G80s and it’s definitely an impressive machine. The M5 is very different in my opinion. It’s got something special that’s hard to explain at times. Glad you made the plunge! I think you’ll be very satisfied!

I agree, I was also in the small camp that LOVED the g80 look. Pictures do it no justice but on the road it is so menacing. In an ideal world, I'd like to have both!

I had never driven a car smaller than the 5 series until I drove a G80 at Thermal. I actually liked it more than the M5 on the track because it does feel more race car where the M5 it almost too smooth. That said the M5 is the right choice for me for everyday driving. IT does everything with clinical efficiency. I can see how that can turn off some reviewers. But if you want to feel everything, get an M3 or a Hellcat, or whatever.
I'd like to go back to Thermal for private instruction. I would split my time between the M3 and M5 since the M3 is fun on the track, but I want to learn the limits of the car I actually own too. And related to armouredsaint above I've always thought of the M3 as a boy's car, the M5 is an adult's car (even though I know that is not the case). Probably because back around 2003 I knew a lot of guys that had M3s. |

Nice pair of cars!
Not a fan of the g80 looks, but respect it for sure Can you compare the real world interior space differences between the two? The g80 seems like such a large car in person; wondering how much more space the f90 has |

To Nick,
Did you ever consider the new M3 CS?

I am considering the switch to M3CS just to try it
this is my second M5C F90 but I also had every variety of the F80 M3 including the CS and I enjoyed though the V8 sound is pushing me back. V8 just feels more commanding but I do believe, after driving my son's G80 C , that the transmission is tuned more aggressively as compared to M5 which I like and CS version is tuned even more aggressive. Drove M4 CSL and that transmission was great , so I am hoping CS has same tuning |

Thanks Tommy I have been watching your videos for some time. Just watched the video to change out the reflectors and saw how big of a difference it made. Went and happen to find a user here that had some for sale in alpine white so those will be going on soon.

Congrats,...I went from G05 M550 & F80 M3 to F90! I did a 2 for 1 trade on a 2019 non-comp,...but loaded!
As you now know, the M5 is just more substance over the M3,...any MY M5,...and any MY M3! However, it goes without saying BMW didn't mean for the two to compete with or against each other.

With that being said I think you are right in that they have far exceeded where they were in previous gens and they will probably continue to be close in performance over the next few years. Its made it hard for BMW on the M5 for the G90 to exceed the performance of the G80 enough to account for the premium over it. The G80 is an amazing car and it should be for the premium it requires. Its no longer a kids car in my eyes where in previous years and generations many looked at the M3 as the young guys car and the M5 as the executive premium sports saloon. After options on the M3 comp xdrive its easily a 90-98K car and it deserves that price I believe. Point being the M3 and M5 have gotten so close to each other in performance but I think its only fair to hold out on that comparison when theyre both in the same generation G80 vs G90. Itll be more interesting to compare. Even though I still bet the S58 modded will easily keep up. What BMW did with that engine is like the new Nissan GT-R. Modded with some bolt ons and a flash tune its lightening fast. Were lucky to have these options. But I do have to agree coming from a G80 to F90 myself that the M5 with the V8 and all its luxuries feels like a premium executive product to me in comparison. I spent a good amount owning both and I dont think I would ever go back to the G80 or M3 even though I did really love the car. |

Congrats! I went the other direction…at least for now. Both solid cars. The f90 is an incredible machine. It’s almost like you need both?

Agreed. Having both would be ideal. Even if performance in a straight line which is what everyone wants to compare is similar, they are each so different that I think you could justify having both. |
