I noticed that sometimes the tail lights have a flame effect. You can see it in this video at the 2:28 mark. I've also seen it on my M5C when I remote started it from the remote, but not always.

When is this effect enabled?

It's just the leds flickering and being slightly out of sync with the frame rate of the video recorder

LEDs flicker , you generally don't notice as it's a high frequency but sometimes with your naked eye you can pick up on it if you say move your eye from one side to another, but generally it imperceptible.

I can always get a laugh from F90 forum. If you want animated tail lights you'll have to buy an Audi.

I will not lie...I see this frequently with the BMW headlights on videos and always wondered how the hell they got them to move around like that. I figured it was a European option or it was the video recorder.

Yup exactly. This happens with all LED captured on video. LED, as I believe, are alternating currents where it actually moves in and out but at a very fast pace that our human eye doesn't notice. However, camera frame rate picks up the in and out current of the LEDs. It actually looks cool on camera especially the front LEDs.

The closest you will get to an M5's lights doing anything other than flash is to pick up dynamic turn signals for your sideview mirrors. Autotecknic makes then, takes 20 min to put in. :-)

I was bored so I tried it on mine, actually looks pretty good!
