Argh, Spun my crank hub.
Well, I knew I should have had the SSR hub installed, but I figured, my cars stock, and a 6MT, so I should be fine for now. Well, today at Homestead-Miami Speedway, that was not the case.
The track officials waved the checkered flag and I let off throttle for a cool down lap. 15 seconds later I get an engine malfunction warning pop up. I check the codes and its a P1938 and P1939. Sent it to my buddy who is also a BMW master tech (the top one in the country) and he was like, eeek. So tomorrow she'll be going in to BMW with 4,820 miles on her to get fully diaged. The best part is, he said supply the SSR hub and he'll install it during the warranty repair if in fact it spun. Car runs and drives, obviously in limp mode and idle has a very suttle misfire. I'll keep you all posted.

sorry about this. it should be covered under warranty, right (especially since you're stock)?

I just had this happen on my stock M3. BMW reset timing but did NOT replace hub. I pushed at dealer but dealer said they could only do what BMW authorized. Also, I was told replacing stock hub with aftermarket would void warranty. Hope your car is ok!

Hmm.. 😕
Sometimes I envy not having a S55 for supposed the added headroom and other times it seems like a blessing in disguise.. Best of luck with the repair, OP.. |

Sorry about the spun crank hub. I wonder what it would take for BMW to initiate a recall and a fix for the sake of people that at some point run out of warranty.

Are you serious? It seems like it will just happen again sometime if that's what they have done.

Agree. Was not happy. I have about a year left on new car warranty plus two years on extended warranty. If I still have car in three years I will replace hub w/ aftermarket.

Did you happen to over-revved the motor or induced any type of driveline shock?
For what I gather, this motor can handle heavy streamline power but a jolt propulsion in torque can trigger an unravel of the crank bolt, for whatever the reason.. |

The hub and chain sprocket have a paper thin friction washer spot welded to them, these parts are considered one time use and those paper thin friction washers often tear when the crank slips. If you simply loosen and retime the sprocket it will not be as strong as virgin parts , it will very likely slip again. Make the dealer aware you are going to contact BMW about this unless they redo the entire job correctly. Or just go straight to BMW customer relations and they will contact the dealer. |

And yet some on here still refuse to acknowledge this as a real problem.
S55 blocks can be sourced quite easily at salvage yards due to spun hubs. At this low mileage too. Good news for OP is at least it wasn't catastrophic and now can get the upgrade out of the way to prevent another one in the future. |

I agree with your thought on torque jolt, which might help explain a lot of DCT issues. On the manual I would avoid hard downshifts when in sport plus...car rev matches for you in comfort/sport, but not sport plus so in sport plus driver must do a good job of heel toe to avoid drive train jolt. |

Dug by matching the OP to his username on a random forum maybe. Ha. The car doesn't know if its on a track or some road where the driver doesn't give a f%ck and is just going hard jumping curbs and whatnot. Plus track days are not timed events, so it should totally be under warranty...and insurance. The key is just don't elaborate on all the details. With 99.9999% of owners NEVER doing a trackday, it's not something that is asked by the SA.
