M tour and M5 Competition comparison

M tour came around the NE last week and I signed up to test drive the M850i XD vert out of a selection of 5 M vehicles. Long story short, after I tested the 8, the instructor said you are free to test anything else, as long as it's not booked! It was a Friday afternoon at 3, so was a little slow. When I checked all was wide open and I said it's time to do my own comparison w/ the comp! Better yet, I was allowed to drive alone, since only the 8 required an instructor! The trek took me on a windy section of a two lane parkway w/ also some straights. I had her all dialed up in sport plus, w/ sport exhaust on, DSC off and D3. First and immediate impression was the exhaust, dammmmmmmm that sounded sweet. The suspension also naturally felt more sportier and I honestly was impressed w/ the ride it was still able to achieve. Wasn't that much harsher than mine. Power wise, 17hp really is a negligible increase at approx 3% and it cannot be felt at all. I think the mags attest to the times / performance being very similar or the same. Looks wise, I like the more aggressive blackouts, etc. Overall, I now would get one once mine goes back, cause my biggest fear was the ride. When I bought my M5 in April '08, there was no option. Again, take advantage of the invite and sign up!

Forgot to comment on braking! Brakes felt the same, but i'm sure they will fade less sooner that non-comp on a track. At the time I drove it for about 20 min, I did not hear any brake squeal, but there are many days I don't hear it on mine either. Any comps have the "squeal"?

My comp brakes only squeal when the wheels are really dirty, give the car a wash and it all goes away. Pretty normal for most performance cars which I have owned.

I only hear it occasionally if inching up at a light. Pretty normal for steel brake cars I have owned and doesn't happen much.

Yeah, it's a chronic problem. I hate when mine does it, sounds like a city bus.

I was at the M Town Tour as well and really enjoyed test driving the F90 Competition. I have a 2016 M5 Competition and I luv my car, but man, the power and all wheel drive of the F90 comp was intoxicating. I felt connected to the road in this car. I liked the interior too as the online configurator doesn't do it justice. Tough decision at lease end in November as I'd like to wait for the LCI.

See you are in my neck of the woods! I went to Kisco, you? I think 2020 gets the LCI, so you should be good! Both cars are truly amazing, comp and non. Hell, I slapped on snows and crushed it all winter long, best car ever owned. However, i'll get a comp next, cause love the exhaust and will change it up for now, w/ all the black accents and all.

Yeah I was there and I signed up for the M850. I also signed up for White Plains and tested the F90 comp. So I waited to test drive it again in Mt. Kisco. The route was much better on the saw mill river parkway than the route in White Plains which was local roads. The all wheel drive is great on these cars especially when your at the light and its pouring out. I'd like to see those residuals go up before pulling the trigger, or low money factor. My 2016 had a 67 percent residual on it when I got it.

Ha! We will have to go on some runs! WP total waste on those roads, Saw Mill was perfect test ground.

what would the competition package have to do with brakes squealing? I can't wait to hear this response.

Some pretty good roads would be Bronx River Parkway north of White Plains as it turns into the Taconic, the 684 not too bad, 287 sucks because of the speed traps, 87 north in cross county Yonkers theres a nice straightaway. And of course Mamaroneck Ave. to show off the beast.

It had ceramic brake option, which I mistakenly forgot to mention, so you can relax....
