Cost of Used M5
I understand these cars are highly reliable but I am curious given their sporty nature and V8 engines if the prices I'm seeing in my area for this car are accurate. I see these great deals and the Carfax looks clean but then I think about "too good to be true" and just need some opinion from here about what I should really expect for these cars when looking to buy. For example:
I see: 2021 M5 base with 30,563 miles for $73,500 2014 M5 base with 43,925 miles for $37,895 2013 M5 base with 22,380 miles for $39,995 The 2021 seems more like the price I would expect but this would be my first BMW "sport sedan" having only owned a 2016 X3 (which came with ALL the bells and whistles used) so I have no basis for comparison.... |

The model changed in 2018 and the former model went out of production a few years before that. I think the 2018+ is improved enough to be worth the extra cost — AWD and some minor engine changes that may help. But if you want RWD and a manual transmission, then the older model is for you.

What interests you about the M5? Because going from driving any suv to a car it’s going to feel a lot more sporty simply from the much lower center of gravity. So you may not need to go all the way to a full fat M.
You should test drive an M5 first to see if it fits your needs. 2013-2016 is the F10 generation, and the 2018+ is the F90. The maintenance cost is quite a bit more than a regular BMW. Wish you the best in your search |

That's the problem with values, as the F90 is relatively reliable in terms of an 'M' car, they arent usually considered reliable by any means. For any of these would need a lot more details to know if it's too good to be true, spot on, or way too high. Things like options, competition ? Base? aftermarket modifications? overall condition? accidents? color? an M5 some of these things make a massive difference, like a comp with carbon brakes, carbon roof, BW audio could easily be 15-20,000.00 more than a base with steel brakes and a sunroof HK audio. The F10 M5 has some issues, reliability wasn't the same as the F90 is. It was made from 2012-2016. So keep in mind there is a good possibility the 2021 is still under warranty, and even with low miles, a 10-12 year old car is scary to some, especially an M car. The F10s new were in the 90-100k range up to 110-120k all optioned out. The F90 100-110k range up to 120-140k range. So the depreciation is right where it should be sorta. But this post requires way more information to give any sort of intelligent rebuttal to what youre saying. |

Good to know about the maintenance cost. I'm getting to the age where I want to worry less about that. The Dodge required spark plug replacement every 30K (besides the usual maintenance), and replacing 16 plugs that often wasn't too bad but it was tedious and I'm not looking for that level anymore. |

So far my wife's 2016 X3 hasn't been too bad. I'm used to some "on top of engine" work like spark plugs, oil change (of course), intake manifold, and whatever surrounding... and so far brakes (replacing and bleeding) and oil changes have been the extent of the work on it, and we bought it used a about 4 years ago.
But I've noticed getting my hands on technical information similar to a Haynes manual has been hard to come by and from what I understand BMW has done that on purpose. Which is why my only real hesitation is how easy it is to maintain. Get around the engine bay, change a belt or alternator etc. From what people are saying here is sounds like the M5 might be a hassle. |

I have a $400 “valve check” service coming up for my 2022 R 1250 GS 40th Anniversary. Between additional maintenance and new tires it’s going to be around $1,400.00 that’s with me changing the oil and spark plugs. 😭 |

That $1000+ covers a “full service” not just valves. $1000+ is for valve clearance check/inspection/adjustment if needed. New plugs oil change and filters. The break out cost for the valves is approximately $400+ for the valve inspection/adjustment. |
