Bump in HP for the next gen F30 3 series?
There was quite a bump in the max HP a 3-series model could have from the E46 to the E90. If I remember correctly, the last 33 came with about 230bhp
and the 335 came up with 300. My question is of there is any rumors regarding the increase in HP for the next generation 3-series. In theory, they should launch a model with at least 340. There is no way they will be able to reduce weight (at least in the standard 3-series). Any thoughts? |

That's hard to say considering the 335is came out not too long ago. That would make the newer 335is take a hit wouldn't it?

thats what BMW like doing frequentely. I think logically the alloys could be lighter, body work lighter, shedding about 50-70 Kgs , and prob make the Bhp to 350 Very Easily, Vishnu tuning can squeeze 370 with any component mods...

Well, haven't we seen some stories about the standard turbo 2L four banger which is supposed to have 240hp in U.S. versions. That would put it up 10hp from the N52 I-6used in the 328 up until this year. Torque is up over the six as well; however, I want to drive one before I am ready to crown the new four cylinder better than the six. Have not heard anything definitive yet on what they might do with the N55 turbo six.

The 335i did not come until the 2007 model year. The flagship E90 in the first year was the 258HP 330i.
So the jump was about 30HP over the outgoing E46. Having said that, I think we will see official numbers initially in the 320HP range for the 335. I would expect the 'is' equivalent to have 350HP. The M3 will have between 450 and 500. Just a guess

I can imagine the 328 will get the same HP as the N52 330i did in 2006 |

Such unrestrained optimism. If the next M3 has 450-500 hp, I might order one.

They've already announced that the turbo 4-cylinder engine in the entry-level 3 series will produce around 245 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque. HP jump won't be huge but the difference in torque will be quite noticeable.

BMW is not going up. The HP wars are over
BMW is looking downward and not upward. A few years ago they were talking quad turbo 4 cylinder. I think there is a reason why the press said the 335is will be a collector's car as it will be the height of engine power for the 3 series before it goes back down. Look through history, HP/Torque has been up and down. Trend is downward right now after a long run of going up.
I think we'll see lighter and smaller engines making the same HP with better efficiency gains and moving more toward the hybrid setup with a small electric motor and more plastic or carbon fiber body panels. Don't be shocked if the next 3 will have more major panels in carbon fiber. |

I don't think the higher end F30 3 series will be a ton more powerful, but I expect a better all around car. A power increase will be done for sure, but most aren't too sure about a drastic increase like the 335i had over the e46 330ci. I'd expect something slightly more powerful than the 335is, but significant improvements in the other aspects of the vehicle.
The e92 335i has too many flaws that need to be worked out still. Most are looking for a much more reliable TT vehicle for F30, rather than a drastic power increase. The 335i would be the perfect car if it wasn't for HPFP, RFT/poor handling, cup holders, uncomfortable seats, mediocre exterior styling, etc. I expect the next 3 series to correct many of the current issues with the 335i, and not release a vehicle with a ton more power. How about the looks and handling of the e46, combined with the speed of the e92, for the F30? |

I'd take 230 HP from an NA 6 over 245 FI 4 ... heat-sink during humid summers in tri-state area (especially w/ AC) can be extremely noticeable. However, would be interested to see how it feels with the big boost in torque. Guess we'll all have to wait and see, although imagine this place would become even more unbearable in terms of 335 > 328 four-banger

I agree with the rest thought, 335 will probably have 320 HP (which you can get with a simple tune, as we will all be out of warranty soon enough)...and 335is gets 349-350 M3 will probably be 450 MAX... I don't see how they can squeeze out more out of an in-line six. Next m3 is really going to be crap, a straight line speed car...no more naturallyaspirated engine. |
