Will dealers patch tires or no?

Will a dealer patch a tire or do they always insist on replacement for liability reasons? I’m talking about an easily patchable tire with the screw in the middle of the tread.

Replace IN PAIRS. There is money to be made.

Learn how to plug them yourself. It's pretty easy and very reliable.

My dealer in Las Vegas won't patch tires. Pep Boys will do it even if you already have 2 patches in a tire :-)

I am in a similar situation with one of my rear summer Pirellis with only 5K miles on it. It’s patchable but Costco declined to patch it, saying that the tire manufacturer and BMW instruct them not to patch these tires as they will lose speed rating.

Since this happened right around the time when I switch to all seasons for winter, I made the switch instead of dealing with it. Now debating if I should get it patched or just switch to PS4S

I’ve had half a dozen patches (proper patches, not plugs) over the last few years and two F90s, exactly as you describe, usually while waiting for a replacement tire to come in. Both branches of my local dealership have done them each time. On one occurrence, I had a hesitant tech, but I insisted to the service manager that it be done, and it was.

Worth noting that somewhere like Pep Boys is generally plugging, not patching. Obviously a plug is not a proper patch.

This happened to one of mine with similar mileage right when I was switching too. I took this as a divine sign to get the PS4S. The Pzeros were fine except with any standing water, which happens plenty around here in moderate rain.

It’s not about whether I should get it patched….I’m definitely getting one. It’s just a matter of whether the dealer will do it or I need to take elsewhere. Sounds like I need to take to tire shop….

To keep your speed rating you should get a proper vulcanised repair. My tyre repair guys will keep the tyre for a day or two. They cut out the punctured area and rebond the layers back in using a special machine/jig that applies heat. Then they smelt rubber back on the tread and recut the pattern. Even sidewall damage up to a certain size can be repaired this way. Costs about £30 but cheaper than a new tyre that's £300

My local dealer stopped repairing tires several years ago saying it is due to liability issues. So I usually just go to Discount Tire for repair.

I've plug many tires. My RS6 twice, Porsche TWICE, M5 Once, Sienna once, second sienna once, Q7 once, civic twice, Avalon once, Subaru WRX once, Several Friends cars. NEVER HAVE HAD AN ISSUE. Plugged several tires on my tractor too.

They work, they are safe. Patches maybe "Better" But how much better I don't know.

Hope you don’t drive like a grandma 🤣

In all seriousness, I was told that a patched tire can simply burst at very high speeds.

Yes, we've all been told that. Your dealer, who has a stock of new tires close by, will certainly tell you that. You'll get into the differential discussion and tire diameter differences. I am not sure what there Differential is for any more.

Interestingly enough, or local Subaru dealer (son's experience) has a machine to WEAR DOWN the new tire to match the older one. Now that is interesting. Maybe something to that differential thing? Who knows.

You know what else can happen at high speeds?

1. A New Nail or chunk of metal can impale your tire just as you 'crush' that Vette
2. A Deer can jump out in front of you (several friends)
3. A chunk of steel can impale your roof (son's Girlfriends car on highway)
4. Large Rock can be dropped from overpass (reported many times by jackasses)
5. You can spill your coffee at high speed (not me LOL)
6. A control arm can give out (any given Chevy or Ford)
7. A wheel can go flying off because the 'dealer tech' failed to torque the lugs (my brother - car salesman at the time and a friend who is a cop - same dealership)
8. Sudden Low Oil Light because debris took out oil cooler
9. TWO nails at the same time, probably common on the Mass Pike at Rush hour LOL.
10. Etc Etc.

Plugs are fine. You have to assess the size of the hole and the location. On sidewall, not a good choice. On a near bald tire, not a good idea, Hole from a 1/2 bolt, probably not a good idea.

If they were not safe, would they still be sold?

Mike

I've used the "temporary" licorice plugs on every car I've owned. They either leaked right away because I didn't get them in all the way, or they lasted until the tire wore out. I wouldn't track a plugged tire, but for street driving if the plug pops out your tire is just going to deflate fairly fast. Since you aren't going faster than ~80, this doesn't seem too bad and you should be able to pull over and stop. The tire won't blow up. After I plug I check the tire pressure every day (after doing a soap test) and keep an eye on it until it has gotten enough heat cycles and worn down and seems stable.

If a newish tire got a puncture, I might take it in to get a patch (which is put on from the inside).

I am trying to understand why would one in their right mind go to the dealer for such service ? I own 08 E60 550i that had some slight issues shifting. I called BMW dealer few weeks ago asked them if they will service valve body or just take it out and send to the automatic transmission shop to have it serviced. No I was told. This is a liability and they will not do that. All they can do is to remove it and installed new one. So in simple words.
We are service shop but we will not repair your car cause it’s liability. Imagine calling let’s say roofing company asking about roof repair and they will go like sorry sir. We will not replace your shingles because of liability reasons, but will gladly get the whole roof removed and rebuilt. This becomes f*****g mad world. It all because of suing culture we have here.

So that there’s someone to point your finger at when the whole tire explodes.

Roofers do exactly that all the time, for the exact reasons you mention.

Ha ha I know I meant the whole structure including rough carpentry anyway why don’t we start replacing cars when oil change is needed. There’s quite liability when it’s not properly done. Damn. I just gave an idea….

Not a novel idea at all. Tesla is practicing it already. A friend recently bumped his brand new model 3 into a boulder on the side of the road because of fog, and thought it was a very minor damage and should be quickly repaired. Insurance totaled the car because Tesla said it will take them 6 months to fix it because some parts needs to arrive from overseas 😂

Yeah. Now on the other hand imagine if insurance had indefinite timing to repair the car. They totaled the car not because of the damage extent but inability to have it repaired within certain timeframe.

There are dealers that use mobile tire repair service, this way the liability is on the vendor/supplier. Regarding roofing full tear off is needed to keep the warranty of the shingles and the labor warranty of course. No overlays!
