Can't believe nobody's added a picture of each. I'll do the honours.
Added an R8 v10 Performance and 992 911 C4S for sake of completeness! |

What made me laugh is the guy in the car next to me not noticing the 992 at all and staring at the M2C. The yellow one with that silly smiley face at the front. It just looks ridiculous. |

If I could afford either instead of my M2C.
NO DOUBT, I'd get the Gt4/ but I'd honestly rather have the spyder. I want it for the experience, not the figures. and a top down 4.0 N/A with all the rigidity and 2 trunks. Yes please. Put my stuff in the front trunk, and my extra pair of pants and boxers in the back for the upcoming mess in my pants from that lovely lovely sound. |

With a chassis designed as a roadster, I don't mind the roadster version. When I bought my Z4M I was really looking for a coupe but ended up with a great deal on a roadster. I do not regret getting the roadster at all. |

I agree the 992 is huge, certainly compared to a classic 911, but compared to the M2 of course it's the same width and less than 2" longer. That said, it could use some diet and exercise to lose both a few pounds and a few inches.

83mph at the top of 2nd gear! With an NA engine with max torque coming in at 5,000 RPM, you would want to wring it out to redline but you are in the speeding ticket territory after only one gear shift. |

I just got my M2 Competition, and also have a 981 GT4 in the stable as well.
I know the OP was asking for the M2 CS, but these two cars are not really comparable. Basically, 718 GT4 is a tweaked 981 with more aero and a different engine. I am actually thinking of trading in the 981 for a 718 GT4 RS once it is available. I really like the M2 Comp. hence why I bought one, and I have no prejudice answering this question but practicality aside, if I were to choose one car out of the two, hands down it would be the GT4. For those people who daily drive, and need 4 seats etc... the answer would already be different. But from a pure driving standpoint the GT4 easily stands out. |

Sucks that you can't change gear with a shift lever like on the M2 DCT especially as the paddles are not column mounted. Dash looks cool but an ergonomic mess. I do like it a lot. Then again it is $US 230k over here on the road. I like it a lot but not that much. |

I was having this debate as well personally and test drove a 2016 GT4 and OG M2 a couple weeks apart and was very comfortable going the M2CS route after doing so for me. I was looking for a car I could drive for fun during the summer and for car gatherings and turn around and comfortably knock out a half dozen track days or more each year, something both cars will do great. After driving them though, the M2 was MUCH more fun as a daily driver for city streets and work commuting. The extra seats were also a bonus.
Things others may find more surprising... There was significantly more road noise in the GT4 than M2, overall exhaust/engine was better in M2 in part because it had personality from low revs up versus GT4 only started to sing above 5k, and you just couldn't get there much in the Porsche in normal driving. Getting in and out was easier in the M2 which isn't a surprise but some other ergonomics were more familiar to me so I preferred that as well, and the ingress mattered to me for taking the car to work and getting in and out five or six times in a day. The GT4 also had constant transmission whine at all speeds that was annoying to me to hear over engine and exhaust. Overall I didn't feel that the CS you would give up much in driving precision or track performance and significantly made up for it in fun factor. "Grins" score during the test drive was a no contest. Last edited by sdhotwn; 01-23-2024 at 06:41 AM.. |

Have a 718 GT4 6MT and OG M2 6MT. Not really close in terms of how they drive. One is a dedicated mid engine sports car and one is a modified 3 series platform. Can’t really think of a better daily driver than my M2 for the $, nor can I think of a better sports car for the $ than my GT4. Always baffled by the forums, journalist/youtubers pitting GT4s against M2 variants as they are so different and serve such different purposes. My sports car soul would never be satisfied with an M2 and my commuting self would be miserable with only a GT4. If you can only have one car to do it all, get a 911. More sporty than an M2 and more liveable than a Cayman.

Had to log in just to acknowledge and commend the last post. Brilliant, simple synopsis.
The only area where I'll ding the M2 as a daily is the firmness and jitteriness of the ride. Otherwise, it's great on the highway, great on back roads. I've driven a 718 Spyder on track and would never track an M2 over it if I had one. Except it's just for fun. The GT4 would destroy the M2 every single time. On the other hand, so much of what the car offers cannot be experienced on the street. So without a track, its at best half used. The 911 as you say is a perfect dissection of both. |
