At my grandma’s house, we could walk a few blocks (down the alley I think) to the “little store” and buy candy. They recognized us even though we didn’t live there and charged it to grandma’s account. Today kids under 10 years old probably wouldn’t be allowed to walk that far alone, and I don’t know of any store that has counter credit any more.

Also in the 1960s, I used to take a couple of cartons of empty soda bottles several blocks (walked of course) to the market for the deposit, then use the deposit to get a haircut next door. I can’t remember the amounts now, but it seems like the haircut was maybe 50c and each carton of 6 bottles was 30c.

Coke and other sodas were warm in the machines, at least at gas stations on road trips. Candy bars also were sold warm, especially in vending machines, which I suppose led to the M&Ms campaign about a sticky mess and “melts in your mouth, not in your hand”

I might have posted some or all of this before; I can’t remember. That is a privilege of getting old!

I've posted before about room temp beer off the shelf being cheaper than the cold beer from the fridges back when I was a young punk.

The slogan was the milk chocolate melts in your mouth. The candy coating on the other hand definitely melts in your hand!

cmyx6go did I fall asleep ALL summer long??? I drove to work this morning and had to turn the headlights on.

I still seem to have the same book on the nightstand, and I'm not sunburned or anything.

Memory is the second thing to go, have I told y'all that one?

Actually I have a couple of out-of-the-mainstream 1965 anecdotes, as my naval officer father transferred from California to the Philippines halfway through my senior year. Sounds traumatic but it worked out great.

We lived on the U.S. Naval Station Sangley Point (now long gone) across the bay from Manila. The base gas station sold gas for 19 cents per gallon if memory serves. I had a small 65cc Honda motorcycle and would get change from a quarter to fill it up.

School kept "tropical hours" (to avoid the heat of the afternoon) which meant classes ran 6 or 7 a.m. to noon. My buddy and I would go to the officer's club at 2-3 p.m. for an afternoon Coke for a nickel and order a side of some wonderful rolls (sort of like King's Hawaiian) for no charge. Or, if we wanted to splurge, a banana split for 25 cents. It was true that recreational opportunities for young people were pretty limited; there was a teen club (which I was president of for a while) with pool tables, a juke box and more nickel sodas. The base wasn't big enough for a golf course, but there was a pitch and putt, a movie theatre and a pool.

If one wanted to venture further afield, there was a shuttle boat to Manila. There were also bars just off base -- the joke was that the drinking age meant you had to be tall enough to get your money onto the bar. I was 17-18 but we were a small group and we had some seriously young kids (maybe 14?) that would participate. Mostly it was the guys that drank beer in those bars, but once in a while the girls would insist on going as well.

Speaking of girls, many of us have kept in contact with each other from those days almost sixty years ago and the one constant complaint from the ladies is that their parents would not allow them to get motorcycles like many of the boys had. Definitely a double standard.

One of the things about going to a high school with only 50 or so students in a foreign country is that it throws together kids of all different types who have to get along.

Really fond memories.

My mind was blown over a decade ago, when I heard a KISS instrumental playing as elevator music.

Around the time that I finished high school, a former neighbor of mine that was about the same age as me used to do an evening 1950's Doo-wop radio show with his uncle on a local radio station every weekend. I hung out in the studio with them on occasion, and remember how they had to lug milk crates of their own records into the studio because get off my lawn.....

Please! I count the days to Memorial Day and it takes forever to get here. I blink and it’s freakin Labor Day and my evil twin isn’t far behind. I feel your pain. I will soon have to start adjusting my schedule because I can’t see driving in the dark. Sun is coming up about 6am so I’m still good leaving at 6:00 unless it’s raining.

Of course you do, you old man!

Seriously, when we were young, differences of a few years were a big deal, put at our age, pffft...equal opportunity! 60, 70, whatever...

I got those when I was reaching 65. Now that I’m a few years older and have had Medicare for a while they leave me alone.
