M5 vs. the Haboob
Don't know when we started calling them Haboob's - it used to be just a huge dust storm back in the day. But we've had a few of them in Phoenix this year. Last night, my freshly washed M5 got caught in an epic Hollywood movie type dust storm. Waves of solid dirt across the road. Not only couldn't you see the front of the car, you couldn't see the actual road. Had to find a way to pull off safely, inch by inch - hoping some jackass wasn't driving blindly behind you.
Cleared after about 20 minutes. M5 did awesome, hardly any dust in the interior, well sealed. The 60-70mph side winds barely bothered the car. But this is what it looked like in the morning. Ugh. |

I gave it a bath. Paint survived the ordeal surprisingly well. Few spots of light scratching that will be easy to buff out. Need to spend a lot more time/detail to get the dust out of all the small areas, but we are expecting another one of these storms tonight.
Impressive durability on the M5 and the paint job! Now to deal with all the downed trees and branches... |

Have you considered the ceramic coating if these storms are a regular occurence in your area?
I've never looked at those coatings because 1) I lease so I don't need the paint to last past about 2.5 years, and 2) I don't think I'll ever be out with any of my cars in a storm where I have to worry about the quality of seals around the vehicle. If I lived in a place where these storms are common, I'd think the ceramic coatings are almost a must, no? |

I am hoping this will be the last time I get stuck, but still worth researching a ceramic coating. |

And an update on the condition of the car. Appears the storm did take a toll. I am now getting "Drivetrain Malfunction" on acceleration. Car drops into limp mode until I shut it off.
I've got an early VIN (2054) so it wasn't effected by that rash of problems a few months ago - and I've already had the software updated at the 1200 mile service. I'm guessing I have dirt/sand in a sensor or two. Its off to the dealer tomorrow, fingers cross they can find it. |

I got the car back today (North Scottsdale - Chapman lost my business).
It was only the air filters. They both looked like small sand boxes and the engine was literally choking. Airways are clear and it’s as good as new. |
