But, where is it in relation to the whole engine? I can't tell from so close.

Kyleh4852 had it right but some intake piping was in the way. Here's another view:

you are talking about the HPFP right? it is on the driverside below the intake manifold (it is off in the pic) if you take your stock airbox out you can see it.

What are you doing that you wanted to remove the engine? Very interested.

It's not my car, thank goodness. Friend of mine owns a body shop, front end repairs required removal of the complete front drivetrain.

Oh, I was hoping to learn of a bigger turbo kit or something.

i've already seen one with a turbo upgrade in the works and the entire engine doesn't need to be removed, but pretty much the top half does.

Can you see where the crank case ventilation is? I could never find it on real oem.

Here is a better angle showing how the down pipes are routed. Look at all the aluminum they use in the chassis!

seems like the system could benefit from some better thermal treatment between the routing of the downpipes and charge lines on the way to the IC.

were there heat shields there that were removed, or are the turbo outlest really on top of the DPs like that?

I too was thinking that some kind of thermal wrap might be very helpful due to the close proximity of the pipes.

Judging by the one single heat shield where the charge pipe comes closest to the manifold I'm betting BMW cheaped out bad. That whole side could use reflective coating and thermal wraps.

even ceramic coating on the DPs would work well.
